In a world where Donald Trump can become president of the United States, why don’t we support Kim Kardashian wanting to be a lawyer? I’ll admit, as soon as I heard the news that the leading Kardashian sister had decided to play her hand at law, I was skeptical. There are obvious reasons for the extensive schooling and practice that becoming a lawyer entails. But as quick as I was to judge everyone’s favorite reality television star, I changed my mind. Kim Kardashian deciding to study law is actually just wonderful news.
We should be applauding Kardashian for wanting to use her platform for something more than the reality television garbage she’s lived in the past twelve years of her life. But instead, after posting her big announcement on multiple social media platforms, criticizing comments began flooding in under her posts. “Stay in your lane”, “you aren’t smart enough to be a lawyer”, “stick to the sex tapes”. UMM… I’m sorry but, what kind of right do we have to tell someone what they can and cannot do? She may not be your flawless Miss U.S.A., but if she wants to step up to the challenge and enhance her career, then she should be able to without any sarcastic remarks from the peanut gallery. I mean, nobody is perfect, right? Kardashian wanting to take on a bigger role in society is admirable and something that I for one will be supporting.
Looking past the start of her career with sex tapes, party scandals, and all of the Hollywood tabloid nonsense, the 38-year-old Instagram queen has actually had quite a successful career so far. As one of the highest paid reality television stars in the U.S. with an estimated net worth of forty million dollars, she has enough fame and fortune to last her a lifetime. Her commitment to four years of shadowing lawyers, studying for countless tests, and taking the California bar is not just for a fun new hobby. Her motives are pure and strictly driven from her passion to make a difference.
And let’s be fair here, this isn’t the same teenage girl who used to party with Paris Hilton on weekday nights. She has responsibilities now. As a mother of three with a fourth child on the way, to say her lifestyle preferences have changed is an understatement. She puts her family first always and has her priorities straight if you ask me. Especially when she continues to stand by her husband after his multiple public meltdowns this past year. That’s commitment.
It was just this last year that Kardashian made headlines for helping a team of lawyers work with President Trump and Shawn Holley on commuting the sentencing of a woman who had served 21 years in prison for nonviolent drug charges. According to a news article by CNN, Kardashian was passionate about Alice Marie Johnson’s case and was determined to get her an early release from her life sentence in prison. She succeeded.
We also need to think about the 135.5 million followers she has on her social media platforms. Whether you want to believe it or not, she is a role model to a lot of people. She’s paving her own path and chasing after her dreams and that’s extremely admirable. To all the young girls out there who think their life has to turn out a certain way, it doesn’t. You can be whatever you want to be and do whatever you want to do.
Kardashian commented on an Instagram post, “I want people to understand that there is nothing that should limit your pursuit of your dreams, and the accomplishment of new goals. You can create your own lanes, just as I am.”
That’s the real takeaway from this all. So let’s all stop looking at all the negatives and start being more optimistic about it all. If she’s going to put the work in and use her platform to make a difference, then all power to her. Of course, she doesn’t need any of our validation to do whatever the heck she wants. But I think we could all be a little nicer to her and the sacrifices she’s making. Again, if we are really going to let Donald Trump become the President of the United States, is it really the worst thing in the world for Kim Kardashian to become a lawyer?
