Remembering Lilly Pulitzer

On Sunday morning I went onto my laptop to do my routine Facebook and Twitter scanning and what I found was some very sad news. Lilly Pulitzer, the iconic fashion designer, has died on April 7, 2013 at the age of 81. Because of this news it’s a sad week for the fashion world and sorority girls everywhere.

Lilly Pulitzer was a famous fashion designer, American socialite, and the founder of Lilly Pulitzer, Inc.  Lilly Pulitzer fashion is known for clothing and accessories featuring bright, colorful, floral prints. The brand is known to be up scale and popular in “high society” and worn by many famous icons. The company produces men and women’s clothing, maternity clothes, children’s clothes, shoes, accessories, bedding, and stationary. Lilly Pulitzer Inc. maintains its own retail shops, also known as Signature Stores, but products can also be found in major department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and many more.

Lilly Pulitzer’s brand is also very popular in the college community. The company debuted its collection called “Sorority” that features accessories such as picture frames, wristlets, scarves, phone cases, and more that sport the a personalized colorful floral prints for many of the different Greek sororities. Each sorority has a signature design that incorporates their Greek letters and the sorority’s national colors all with the Lilly Pulitzer print design. So far the line consists of designs for 14 of the sororities.  Each year they bring new chapters into the collection.

The company, Lilly Pulitzer Inc., has been around since 1959 and still thrives today.  The fashion world admires her for her beautiful work and success. Her clothing has been worn by famous icons such as Caroline Kennedy and members of the Rockefeller and Vanderbilt families. Along with the success of the company, Pulitzer has been featured in several books and published a few of her own lifestyle books.  From 2010-2011 an exhibit at the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History was dedicated to her clothing line.

She died in her home in Palm Beach, Florida and had three children.  Lilly Pulitzer’s work and brand will live on and continue to thrive.  Rest in peace, Lilly.
