Raven Nance, ISU junior, is a driven young woman and has a lot on her plate. Yet she manages it all so well. She participates in organizations that promote self growth, which teaches you important skills needed in life. As the vice president of ISU’s student chapter of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a member of UNITE, Raven Nance is certainly going places.
HC: Raven, what is your major?
Nance: My major is English education with endorsements in reading and middle school.
HC: So, are you involved in campus? If so what do you do?
Nance: I am currently the Vice President of ISU’s student chapter of NAACP and a member of UNITE.
HC: What are your duties for this organization as vice president?
Nance: My duties as VP are to basically assist the President with anything he needs assistance with and to make sure everyone within the organization is on task and on the same page. I help think of and host different events that support our mission statement and goals.
HC: What inspired you to join these organizations?
Nance: Freshman year my good friend got me interested in NAACP and ever since then I have been taking on leadership roles within the organization because I felt/feel it’s an organization deserving of strong leaders who would make it their personal goals to move the organization forward in every aspect. I joined UNITE because I am passionate about becoming a teacher and helping the youth. There are many teaching organizations at ISU but I thought UNITE was special because of its focus on urban education, which I wanted to learn more about.
HC: What are your plans after college?
Nance: After college I plan on teaching high school English classes in Chicago or perhaps some other urban area in the nation.
HC: Are there any events coming up for either of your organizations?
Nance: On Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Schroeder 130 we are having a financial event entitled “For the Love of Money,” where a speaker will talk about paying back loans, creating a realistic budget, etc. Pam Cooper from our Career Center will also be presenting some information about resume tips and searching for jobs.
HC: How does one become a part of UNITE or NAACP for Illinois State?
Nance: If someone were interested in joining NAACP they could contact me, the President Donell Bluford, or the Secretary Maya Williams by either Facebook or e-mail. Membership for a year is $10 for those under 21, and $30 for those 21 and older. Our general board meetings are every other Tuesday at 7 p.m., usually in the Spotlight Room in the Bone. If someone wants to join UNITE they could come to the weekly Wednesday meetings at 7 p.m. in Degarmo Hall.
HC wishes you nothing but success on your future endeavors!
