Thoughts on College so Far (and tips I’ve learned)

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

When I came to Illinois State University, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I came in with the right mindset, but not 100% devoted to education (mistake). I want to take a moment to reflect on how I could’ve changed things; presented with the opportunity. In this article, I look to cover classes, social aspects, time management, work, etc.

From an education standpoint, my first semester could’ve been better. I wanted to go out every night of the week (it was harder to turn down opportunities). I still went to a majority of my classes, but I struggled to get to early afternoon classes after long nights out…during the week! I still managed to finish my semester with A’s and B’s, but my parents were not happy that I dropped my fail class without any warning. For semester two, I rarely go out during weeknights, and I have been prioritizing my homework first, which is what I always should have been doing. So, College Tip Number One: Your classes and school work comes first!

For social aspects: I didn’t really have an issue making friends my age. I didn’t rush a sorority until second semester either. I met people through parties that I connected with. We would go out a few more times, and eventually, we would hang out during the day. I still love my friends and hang out with them even after I joined my sorority! It is possible to make time for everyone as long as you have a set plan. Besides friends, I also spend time with my boyfriend who I met through college as well. Our schedules are busy, but we’re still able to see each other almost every day. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people, it could cause you to find new best friends (this is my College Tip Number Two).

When it came to time management, it’s still something I’m figuring out to this day. I don’t really like having an
“every day devoted schedule,” because it feels too foreign. What I found works best is that whenever I decide to start my day, I need to make a plan. I try to plan basic things that have to get done during the day, and once I get them done I find out what more I can do with the time I have left. That way I feel productive all while enjoying my day. So, College Tip Number Three: Plan your day, don’t schedule it. (And honestly, if you schedule your day, you might be discouraged if you don’t get everything done in time).

Those are just a few observations I have made throughout my time in college as a freshman, but I will certainly get to experience more as time goes on. But with experience comes new stories and opportunities!
