Top Ten Takeaways of Trump VS. Hillary

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

The first 2016 presidential debate lived up to its expectations. During this fiery season of democracy in America it’s no question that turning on the TV for a debate also includes grabbing the popcorn. We know things will be said that make us laugh. We know that this is our guiltiest of pleasures – finding entertainment in current events to understand memes in the media afterwards. Truthfully, it couldn’t have gone any more according to plan. Here are some of the highlights of the first debate and why they were so painfully amusing

1. Both candidates were prompting each other to share information they have both rendered secret. As if we hadn’t heard that one before, guys.

2. Both candidates exhibited purposeful fashion choices meant to mind boggle us even more and create more trust issues.

3. Donald Trump deemed “stop-and-frisk” policies to be successful, although ruled unconstitutional.

Although, of course, our fact checkers cleared SOME of it up for us:

4. Trump said that we should’ve taken the oil in Iraq although simultaneously saying that he was against the war in Iraq.

5. Hillary was ridiculed for her epic mistakes in deals, deals, deals, and more deals.

6. Temperament. That is all.

7. Each candidate was told his or her time was up yet continued to talk. Every. Single. Time.

8. Of course Hillary had to throw in something about Donald’s sexist vernacular.

9. Donald said that our biggest problem is “nuclear”, not global warming, and Hillary said that Donald couldn’t handle nuclear.

10. And of course, both candidates won. There are no losers in today’s day and age.

On the bright side, at least both of them could pronounce “nuclear” and we had a reason to eat our popcorn. Oh and, Law and Order. Law and Order solves all of our problems. Who knew a TV show had that much agency? Maybe all of the most credible policians rely on Law and Order to form their debate platforms.

Until next time my fellow Americans. I expect the next episode of our most realistic reality TV to be just as predictable, just as presidential, and just as priceless.
