What We Know About Bridgerton Season 2

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

One year ago, the Netflix Original Series Bridgerton was renewed for a second season… a third… and a fourth. Ever since then, fans of the dramatic historical romance show have been craving information about the upcoming seasons. On Christmas Day, Netflix released a video announcing season two’s release date will be March 25, 2022. Since then, there have been quite a few updates about what story this next season will tell and other information about our favorite characters.

a recap of season 1 and Season 2 plot

Shonda Rhimes got the idea for the project from Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, which is composed of eight novels each focusing on one of eight siblings. The first season takes place in 1813 and introduces us to the Bridgerton family and follows closely with Quinn’s book The Duke and I. We follow the eldest daughter, Daphne, in her journey of finding her true love and her relationship with The Duke. This time, the season will follow the oldest son of the Bridgerton family, Anthony, as he looks for a wife (which will align with the plot of the second book in the series The Viscount Who Loved Me). To make things more interesting for this season, the oldest Bridgerton sibling has admitted that he would rather marry for “duty rather than love.”

Of course, the show will also continue to focus on Lady Whistledown, who reports all the drama between the families and citizens of the town square. It was revealed at the end of season one that Penelope Featherington is Lady Whistledown. The next season will show Penelope struggling between her two identities and how she is stuck between her real life and her secret life as Lady Whistledown continues to report the newest gossip in the next season.

Which Characters are returning?

Despite there being many returning faces from the first season, it has been said that Regé-Jean Page, who played The Duke Simon Basset in the first season, will not be returning. Although, it was confirmed that he would be mentioned throughout the season. We will continue to see Daphne and watch her relationship with her family grow. The new season includes a couple of new characters as well, like the Sharma Family.

the future of bridgerton

What do we know about the show beyond this upcoming season? Although there are very minuscule details surrounding the long-term future of the show, Shonda Rhimes has said that she wants there to be at least eight seasons so that there is one season highlighting each sibling. Season three can be expected to follow Benedict and season four will focus on Colin. There are also upcoming plans for a spin-off show about Queen Charlotte as well; this spin-off will act as a prequel to Bridgerton and focus on how Charlotte became the Queen.

When the first season of Bridgerton aired, it quickly became Netflix’s most popular show. Whether this was due to the steamy romance plotlines, the delightful characters, the staggering outfits, or the scandalous gossip, viewers just couldn’t get enough of the show. Despite a couple of behind the scene shots and teasers for season two, it is hard to wait until March 25 for the new season to air.
