5 Spring Makeup Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The snow and ice has finally melted away, and temperatures have been slowly climbing back up to a bearable standard (let’s not talk about this past week). A good indication that the weather is getting warmer is the fact that many of us are changing the contents of our makeup bag. That and how packed the Quad is getting! It is important to seasonally change out your makeup to ensure that you are getting the most out of it. As the days get longer, you’ll be wearing your makeup for longer times, and through more grueling temperatures. You will want your makeup to last all day, while still feeling lightweight and low maintenance. We’ve found five must-have products for springtime on campus.

1. Sunscreen

With all of the recent research about the dangers of sun exposure, you should be wearing sunscreen every day, regardless of the weather. Make sure to choose one that is specifically formulated for your face to ensure that it is light enough to wear under whatever makeup you want to put on. No one likes to add this extra step to their beauty routine, but two minutes of applying sunscreen outweighs the alternative: leathery, wrinkled, sun-damaged skin.

2. Tinted Moisturizer

Unless your skin calls for heavy coverage, foundation can be a little too much for a warm spring day. Switch it out for a tinted moisturizer to get the benefit of SPF protection and hydration during spring. We recommend going to a beauty counter to get color matched because tinted moisturizer often runs lighter than the packaging.

3. Cheek Tint

Powder blush can melt, and the results can be gross. As it starts to warm up, your face will naturally sweat, forcing makeup to drip and look unnatural. Stick to a cream formula so the color blends into your skin. The darker the color, the more saturated it is, so don’t be afraid of deep blush hues!

4. Eyelash Curler

Okay, technically not a product, but this tool can save your eye makeup! By curling your lashes you can get an open-eyed look that will allow you to wear less eyeliner. This will also allow you to use less mascara, which will not only save you money, but will give your face a chance to breathe from all of the heavy products we normally coat on. A win-win, because when it gets hot out, the less makeup, the better!

5. Lip Crayon

Spring into springtime with a balm that is light enough to moisturize, but heavy enough to deliver some serious color. We love corals and pinks to complement sun kissed skin! Find a color that looks natural with your lips, and continue to apply moisture throughout the day to retain that springy color.

When selecting makeup for warm weather, the goal is to find products that won’t weigh you down over the course of a hot, sweaty day. Sticking to light, natural looking makeup basics will get you the look you want without clogging your pores under heaps of foundation and powder.
