Beauty Blog: Diet, Exercise and… Biotin? Oh My!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

False advertising is easily convincing. Ads and products claim to make us skinnier, younger, and prettier. They constantly surround us, claiming to be “miraculous” or “what we’ve been waiting for.” As an advertising major, I’ve learned the techniques and tricks companies use to entice us, and I’ve begun to look beyond them. Although there’s no such thing as a “miracle pill,” I recently found a supplement that is now a staple to my beauty and health.

This past summer, my hair stylist recommended biotin supplements. They’re advertised to make your hair longer, nails stronger, and your skin healthier. It may also prevent hair loss and wrinkles down the road.

Now, I’m not telling you that this will turn you into Rapunzel, nor will it erase all blemishes over night. However, adding a 1000mg capsule to my daily routine has made a noticeable difference.

My hair is noticeably thicker, shinier and may have even grown a little. I shouldn’t complain, but my nails are growing almost too fast! I still break out after sleeping with my makeup and on random occasions, but I’ve got to say that those occasions seem to be less frequent than before.

Biotin has been approved by the FDA and is recommended for anyone who is experiencing temporary hair thinning. It’s available at local drugstores for an affordable price, as well as at GNC in a wide variety of doses. Like I said, it’s no miracle pill, but it’s definitely worth a shot As always, diet, exercise and lots of water are also crucial components to a stellar beauty regimen.
