“Free.” Ahhh, the wonderful word that is magic to a college student’s ears. I’m from Chicago
and have three younger siblings, so I’ve been taught from a young age to utilize all the free
opportunities I can in an expensive city. Whether you want culture, fun in the sun, or just a great
date idea that won’t cost much, here are my favorite ways to save money during the summer in
Chicago.
1. Chicago Park District Activities
One of my all time favorites: you can’t go wrong with a summer night in the park. The Chicago
Park District provides over 1,000 plus free entertainment events on a regular basis such as
movies and concerts. Pack the picnic basket and break out the blankets for these evenings
of entertainment. The Chicago Park District is also once again partnering with the Chicago
Shakespeare Theater to put on a performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” that will travel to
neighborhood parks around the city.
Bonus: Every Saturday during the summer, Millennium Park hosts tai chi, yoga, pilates, and
zumba classes. Wear your favorite workout clothes and show up for a great class that will get
you fit and energized.
2. Lakefront
We’re so lucky as Chicagoans to have the gorgeous cityscape combined with the lakefront, that
sometimes we take our views for granted. So this summer get out on the lakefront and enjoy
some of the best views in the world. Get some exercise by biking, running, or even just walking
the Lakefront Trail. Hit the beaches, like the typical Oak Street and North Avenue
beaches, or go farther south or north for less crowds.
Bonus: Every Wednesday and Saturday night during the summer, Navy Pier sets off a fantastic
fireworks display. These are great to watch from any spot along the downtown area’s lakefront.
3. Lincoln Park Zoo and Conservatory
Skyscrapers and pigeons hardly qualify as wildlife, so take a trip to the zoo and get your jungle
on. With abundant animals and great city views, the Lincoln Park Zoo is one stop I’ll always
make when home. Stop thinking you’re too old for the zoo and enjoy the safari. After the zoo,
head over to the Lincoln Park Conservatory for a look at some very pretty flowers and other
interesting plant life.
Bonus: Check out Zoo Lights during winter break when the zoo is open in the evening.
Thousands of lights guide visitors from exhibit to exhibit, and although Chicago winters can be
brutal, but it’s worth bundling up for this experience.
4. Museums
Want to see Sue the dinosaur? Or learn about the stars at the Planetarium? Well do it all over
the summer. The Chicago Public Library has passes that offer free admission to 15 museums.
However, each pass admits a maximum of two adults who are required to bring one child under
18, so take a younger relative for a great experience. Be aware that the big ticket museums like
the Shedd Aquarium or the Museum of Science and Industry are often being distributed, so
check back frequently to get your chance.
Bonus: In addition to the library passes, some museums offer free admission on certain days so
be sure to check the websites.
