Fashion Blog: Jason Wu for Target

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Versace for H&M had its run, but now it’s a new year, and it’s time for Target to unveil its latest “designer-for-less” collection. The lucky deisgner this time around is Jason Wu. Some of you might scratch your heads at the name, but this young designer has certainly put himself on the map, creating Michelle Obama’s one-shouldered gown for her first night as First Lady. Wu’s designs have been seen on the likes of Lea Michele, Reese Witherspoon and, most recently, Michelle Williams. The 53-peice collection, which Wu describes as “perfect for spring” arrived in stores and online yesterday. And the best part is, it’s all for under $59.99!

A few of my favorite picks:

Lace-Printed Skirt ($29.99)

The fancy look of this pencil skirt makes it appropriate for work and play. Pair it with a bright blouse to add a dash of color and black pumps for a classic-chic look.

Flared Dress in Cream ($59.99)

A classic off-white dress gets an upgrade with a black lace underlay and black patent belt. Pair it with a denim jacket for the day or a black leather jacket for night.

Long-Sleeved Sailor Sweater ($32.99) and Cuffed Shorts ($26.99)

This combo is great paired together for a relaxed weekend look, or wear them as separates – a classic striped shirt never goes out of style, and the structured shorts will give your denim cutoffs a run for their money.

Poplin Dress in Navy ($39.99)

Match this dress with a black blazer for a serious work-chic outfit. The red and pink stripes give this dress a touch of sweetness.

Pleated Skirt ($29.99)

The whimsical design of this skirt is absolutely adorable, and you won’r be able to tell that it’s from Target! Give the skirt some edge with a biker jacket, white tank and high-heeled booties.

Peplum Top ($32.99) and Pleated Skirt ($29.99)

This is color-blocking at its finest: The mustard yellow (a signature of Wu’s, as seen on Diane Kruger at the 2010 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards) and the navy skirt blend exceptionally well together. If you’re afraid to try color, this mustard yellow is a great pick. It’s very muted, so it almost looks like a neutral, and practically goes with anything. Rock the top peeking out from under a black blazer for a pop of unexpected sunshine.

Trench Coat ($54.99)

This isn’t just any trench coat; it’s one you’ll actually want to wear over and over again. Best for a night out look, the white lace stitching makes the coat look more expensive than it actually is. It’s a very versatile piece

Pointelle Sweater ($39.99)

If you’re stuck in the cold weather rut, tuck those winter blues away with this bright cardi. The color is a perfect shade for spring, and will instantly boost your mood when you put it on.

Black Lace Clutch ($29.99)

Of all the bags featured in the collection, this one is by far my favorite. It’s a cute purse for a night out, and the lace detail makes it sweet.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
