Fashion Blog: Keep Warm this Winter with Trendy Layers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Collegiettes at the University of Illinois woke up to snow on campus this past weekend, and as much as I hate to say it, this can only mean one thing: winter is fast approaching. It’s time to break out the winter coats and boots, and bundle up for the season ahead. With hats, gloves and warm-weather clothing, piling layers on your body can make you appear bulky and unstylish. To avoid looking like an abominable snowman, take a look at these tips to help make winter layers fashionable and practical as you dash through the snow.

Layer #1: White Tank Top

This should be a staple in every collegiette’s closet, as it will serve as a smooth base for the heavier layers. Try the Men’s Hanes 5-pack wife beaters (available at Target for $5.99). Save on the basics and splurge for the heavier layers.

Layer #2: Thin Under Armour Long-Sleeve Shirt

Under Armour shirts are great for exercising outdoors, but they also work great in protecting your skin from the harsh winter air. Plus, they come in a variety of colors, so even if the rest of your outfit is neutral, a bright pop of color can change-up your whole look.

Layer #3: Thin Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere is everywhere during the winter season. The ultra-soft material will keep you cozy even as the temperatures reach the single digits. Long-sleeved v-neck sweaters are the most flattering, but turtlenecks also work well to keep your neck warm. Heavier sweaters add bulk, which can make you look bigger. While cashmere sweaters may be on the expensive side, they are essentials that you don’t want to scrimp on. J.Crew and Lord and Taylor are two great outlets that allow you to choose from a variety of colors; they are actually relatively inexpensive for cashmere. Cashmere sweaters go with everything, even over summer dresses paired with tights. Plus, they’ll last you all winter long, so it’s worth the investment. Also try maxi cardigans, winter’s take on the maxi dress trend. These will really come in handy when the thermometer dips below zero.

Layer #4: Leather Jacket

When done right, a leather jacket over a classic cashmere sweater doesn’t look bulky at all. An alternative to a puffer jacket, the leather jacket option can be a great transition piece from day to night.

Layer #5 (optional): Winter Coat

Our winters are so long, that by the time April rolls around, we’re sick of our winter coats. This year, invest in a slightly long coat (about a few inches above the knee) to keep all of the layers at bay and be fashionable walking to class. A belted coat cinches your waist, and you can’t go wrong with a classic pea coat.

Bottom Layers: Black Leggings/Tights

I’m sure every collegiette has a pair of black leggings in her closet — it’s become kind of a staple. Black leggings go with everything, and I’ve discovered that they make a fantastic layering piece. Layer the black leggings under your skinny jeans or pants for extra warmth. Or, just skip the jeans and invest in a pair of cashmere leggings. Since you already wear leggings on a (almost) daily basis, step up the warmth factor and add extra chic-ness to your outfit. Use tights to layer under your summer dresses to make them wearable year-round.

The Extras:

Scarves: Pick a scarf in a bright pattern to add a pop of color and warmth to your neck. Infinity scarves are a stylish way to add warmth without the bulk.

Mittens/Gloves: Winter’s here, and as a result, your hands can become chafed at a much faster rate. Fleece-lined mittens will keep your hands fashionable and free from frostbite. Most importantly, make sure your hand protectors are fingerless, so you’ll be able to keep your fingers warm while you’re on your phone.

Hat: A knit cap can turn a bad hair day into a chic hair day, no matter the weather. You don’t have to go looking like a lumberjack with one of those fur-lined hats. If you’re worried about hat hair, run a dryer sheet on the inside of the hat to prevent static. If you’re more of a headband girl, then check out Urban Outfitter’s Cable Knit Ear Warmer ($24) – an ear protectant that is equally fashionable.

Boots: As for boots, make sure to pick ones that are sturdy enough to trudge through the snow yet keep your feet cozy as you walk to class. Check out these picks for braving the winter in style.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
