For Most women, there’s a certain time of year that provokes a wistful nostalgia. I’m talking, of course, about fall. It’s that magical period smack dab in between the outrageously high temperatures of the summer and the frozen wasteland that the Chambana area inevitably becomes during the winter. Even I find myself longing for the days of sweater weather and pumpkin spiced lattes during the summer. Unfortunately, the fall of our dreams will usually not come to fruition. Yes, the sweaters and pumpkin spiced coffee products are pretty cool. However, that doesn’t make up for the freezing rain, seemingly unstoppable flu season, overcast skies and the almost unbearable stress of midterm season. It’s completely natural to feel a little down in the dumps right about now. Luckily, the suckish weather provides the perfect opportunity to curl up with a good movie. Below are the three greatest movies that will cheer you up, no matter how bad of a mood you’re in.
Legally Blonde (2001)
Elle Woods is a ravishingly beautiful and charmingly shallow Delta Nu sorority president and big woman on campus of sun-drenched California. After being unceremoniously dumped by her upper crust boyfriend Warner Huntington III for Harvard Law, she becomes determined to chase her man all the way to the Ivy League. What makes this movie such a great pick-me-up is that Elle Woods always retains her sunny optimism, even in the face of sneering, blue-blooded East Coasters. Watching Elle traverse through the ups and downs of law school shows us that we to can make it while remaining true to ourselves.
Bring it On (2000)
Torrance Shipman finally achieved her dream of being the head cheerleader of the six-time championship winning cheerleading team, the San Diego Toros. However, with her new position comes a shocking secret: the Toros’ routines were regularly stolen from a rival team, the East Compton Clovers. Along with a new ally in the form of transfer bad girl, Missy Pantone, Torrance vows to win the championship for the Toros on her own. What makes this movie great is that it plays the seemingly petty rivalries between cheer squads earnestly. Amazing cheer sequences and unforgettable dialogue (who doesn’t know what sprit fingers are?) make this movie an instant classic.
Cry Baby (1990)
Directed by the master of weirdness himself, John Waters’ Cry Baby is a satirical take on classic teen musical films (think Grease). It centers on a group of delinquents that call themselves “the drapes,” and they’re clashing with the other residents of the town, “the squares”. Cry Baby, a drape, and Allison Walker, a square, throw the whole town into an uproar when they begin a forbidden romance. This musical has everything from awesome costumes and songs to Johnny Depp in his prime, starring as Cry Baby.
