Five Things Your Gyno Isn’t Telling You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

As ladies, we have duties when it comes to taking care of our bodies. Regular check-ups are important, especially when they involve our lovely lady parts.

Many of us rely on our doctors to tell us what’s going on with our bodies. They are the experts, after all. But our docs are very busy people — they have many other ladies to examine. For this very reason, our doctors may not be able to tell us everything that we want to know, leaving us as clueless as when we first walked into the office.

Here we give you the low down (ya get it, the low down?) on what your Gynecologist may not be telling you.

Pee before and after sex: Sexual activities put pressure on the bladder which causes an urge to urinate. To avoid this uncomfortable feeling during sex, peeing beforehand is a good idea. It’s also a good idea to pee after sex even if the urge isn’t there. By doing so, you can greatly reduce the risk of a urinary tract infection. Even if this small step seems insignificant, it can save you from excruciating pain and drinking tons of cranberry juice.

Toys aren’t for sharing: Okay, this one seems as obvious as not sharing your tooth brush, but we’re just making sure this message is planted in your head. When it comes to sex toys, be as “selfish” as you need to be. Sharing sex toys with your girl friends is not only gross, but it leads to the spread of bacteria and germs. Sharing is not so caring is this case.

Use a pad at night: This tip is for the ladies that opt for tampons during that time-of-the-month. The longer you go without changing your tampon, the more likely you are to develop an infection.  Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but potentially fatal illness caused by a bacterial toxin; it is often associated with tampon use. To avoid this, change your tampon frequently.

While it’s okay to wear your tampon at night, you must make sure to wear it for a maximum of 8 hours. If you plan on sleeping in on the weekend, you might want to consider using a pad instead.

Let your lady breathe:  Ladies, we know you wear your lace panties to look sexy underneath those clothes, but wearing cotton underwear has many comfortable and healthy benefits! Did you know that itching, odor, and discharge may decrease just by wearing cotton underwear? Not to mention, cotton undies free your vagina from excessive moisture which allows it to “breathe.”

Avoid using fragrances down there: Vaginas aren’t meant to smell like roses. While we’re not condoning vaginal odors, we also don’t condone using any kind of fragrance spray on your vagina either. Sprays can irritate the vagina and cause an infection. To keep yourself fresh, wash regularly using a soft cloth with water and fragrance free soap.
