Food Blog: We all scream for ice cream – The Collegiette’s guide to healthier frozen treats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

It’s warming up here in Chambana, and springtime temperatures make us Collegiettes crave one dessert in particular: ice cream!

However, with summer approaching, we have to be cautious. Nothing wrecks bathing suit season like an overdose of ice cream and unnecessary toppings. Use this ice cream guide to help you make the smartest choices for your taste buds and for your waistline.

Coldstone Creamery: 505 E. Green Street, Champaign, IL 81620
It’s no secret that Collegiettes love their Coldstone. Unfortunately for us, their ice cream and mix-in’s are packed with calories. But wait – there’s hope! Order one of these yummy options:
Pineapple Sorbet – Like it  – 140 calories
Sinless Cake Batter Ice Cream – Like it size – 210 calories
Eggnog Ice Cream – Like it – 260 calories

Dairy Queen: 3602 North Mattis Avenue, Champaign, IL 61820
DQ is notorious for their Blizzards, but their plain soft serve doesn’t get enough credit. A swirl of vanilla soft serve on a cake cone is a delicious treat, and it’s just as good as one of those giant Blizzards:
Vanilla Cone – Small – 230 calories
Chocolate Cone – Small – 240 calories
DQ Strawberry Sundae – Small – 260 calories

Baskin-Robbins: 515 South Neil Street, Champaign IL  61820
Baskin-Robbins boasts its 31 flavors. Unbeknownst to many, BR also offers frozen yogurt in addition to regular ice cream. It’s creamy and yummy, and it doesn’t contain a ridiculous amount of calories:
Fat-free Vanilla Frozen Yogurt – 4 oz scoop – 150 calories
Strawberry Frozen Yogurt – 4 oz scoop – 180 calories
Chocolate Chip Ice Cream – 4 oz scoop – 260 calories

McDonald’s: 1605 South Neil Street, Champaign, IL 61820
Sometimes, a McFlurry is the answer to every problem. Those things are nowhere near healthy, of course. It’s a good thing that Mickey D’s has other satisfying options:
Caramel Apple Parfait – Small – 180 calories
Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream Cone – Small – 150 calories
Strawberry Parfait – Small – 280 calories

So, ladies, next time you’re screaming for ice cream, choose an item on the lighter side. You’ll still get a tasty treat, but the number of calories will be much smaller. Enjoy!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
