It’s a rainy week in Chamabana and all I seem to find myself doing is cuddling up in my room and downloading new music. While I love finding brand new music that is sure to hit the radio waves in months to come, there’s nothing better than discovering a creative mash-up made with two of your favorite songs.
Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, is arguably one of the best mash-up DJs in the game. Lucky for us, he was the headliner for WPGU Presents: The 312 Summer Camp Music Festival Pre-Party with Girl Talk! WPGU was kind enough to hook me up with some tickets to this sold out show at Canopy Club and once they were in my hands, I prepared for what I knew would be a crazy night.
Girl Talk did not disappoint. With a packed house and over 1,000 brightly colored balloons ready to be dropped from the ceiling, the atmosphere was full of energy, sweaty people (I watched a kid strain his t-shirt, ew), and crazy dancing. To be honest, I expected Girl Talk’s set to be a simple compilation of his biggest hits from his albums. I was pleasantly surprised to hear completely new mash-ups and a variation of songs from his latest album, “All Day”. Needless to say, everyone left the show drenched in sweat, confetti stuck to their clothes, and a smile on their face.
There was a HUGE announcement in the music world this week and even if you have no interest in this event, I’m sure you have had at least a few friends make statuses, tweet, or simply run around the streets jumping for joy at the Lollapalooza 2011 lineup announcement. With the headliners being Eminem, Muse, Foo Fighters, and Coldplay, this year’s Lolla will definitely give people the most bang for their buck.
I am a huge fan of each one of the headliners, but was has me most excited for this three day show is the line up at Perry’s. Skrillex, Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, Afrojack, Savoy, and one more round of Girl Talk. Is this real life? The answer must be no because on top of that, Deadmau5, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah, and Beirut will be killing it on the main stage. If you haven’t noticed, I can’t get over this epic line up. Keep in mind I have mentioned only a fraction of the many peformers. Check out the rest of the Lollapalooza line up here: http://lineup.lollapalooza.com/ and come back next week for the top ten up and coming Lollapalooza 2011 artists!
Can’t wait for all of the DJ action going down at Lolla? Don’t miss WPGU’s Frattle of the DJ’s Finale tomorrow at KAM’s starting at 10:30pm! The DJs in the finale are DJ Luniks of Lambda Theta Pi, DJ Hot Saus of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and you will help decide between DJ Skuxx of Acacia and DJ Sta-C of Alpha Epsilon Pi for the third finalist. The winner walks away with $1,000 cash prize and major bragging rights. Free glow sticks, crazy lighting, and thumping bass make this an event you don’t want to miss!
