Grammy Recap + Headphones You Need to Buy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Happy Valentine’s Day HC followers! I have to admit that I’ve been blissfully in love all weekend. I recently purchased the Beats by Dr. Dre Monster Tour In- Ear Headphones and…WOW. We are a match made in heaven. These headphones are by far the best quality I have ever experienced. While many people are satisfied with the standard Apple headphones that come with their iPods, I am certain that after giving the Beats a try, music lovers will never go back to mediocre ear buds ever again! The bass levels that these little things can produce is very impressive. Acoustics are great as well. They are noise cancelling, which proved to be a minor issue for me today on my walk to class when my friends were trying to get my attention. Alright, I’m sounding super nerdy but I just can’t get over how awesome these are. They are on the pricy side (they go for $149.99 at BestBuy) but in my opinion, they are completely worth it.

Putting my new headphones to use, I sat down last night to listen to some music, do homework, and of course, watch the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. Justin Bieber showed that he is still lacking a little bit of fashion sense by wearing white sneakers with a cream colored Gucci suit, Rihanna wore a revealing yet glamorous Jean Paul Gaultier number, and Lady Gaga continued her awards show antics by arriving to the red carpet in an egg. Yes. An egg.

The night started off with an amazing tribute to Aretha Franklin by Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Jennifer Hudson, and Yolanda Adams. Christina managed to remember all of the lyrics, but still had a little slip up when she nearly fell to the ground after the performance. I could write about how great each and every one of the performances from last night were, but two in particular won me over. Mumford and Sons’ performance with The Avett Brothers and a chain-smoking Bob Dylan was pure genius. It’s great to see a band such as Mumford and Sons, which began as a small English folk rock band, receiving national recognition on the Grammys. While Bob Dylan may have uttered one discernible sentence, he brought the two bands together for a memorable performance. Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Janelle Monae also put on quite the show with their own respective top singles. The screen faded to black and white when Bruno Mars gave an old school rendition of “Grenade”. Overall, the night was full of amazing performances and stunning fashion.

The award winners caught me more off guard than Nicki Minaj’s leopard print onesie. I knew Lady Antebellum would take home quite a few awards, but Record of the Year AND Song of the Year was a little much. Empire State of Mind is a song that will surely become a classic, and Love The Way You Lie was one of the most sold records of 2010. I think I can speak for a majority when I say that no one saw Esperanza Spalding winning Best New Artist. Justin Bieber may have cried a little on his ride home with Usher, but Drake was truly robbed of this one. Another slight surprise was Album of the Year which went to Arcade Fire and their album “Suburbs”.  Ultimately, I have 25% accuracy on my predictions. Not happy about it, but the academy works in mysterious ways.
