Move Aside Superman, There’s A New Woman in Town

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Although Superman has ruled the comic book stands and movie screens for years, a rise in powerful women in our generation is proving that there’s a new boss in town. Whether it is Ellen DeGeneres making everyone laugh or Alicia Keys singing her self-esteem anthems, there are many lessons to learn from the powerful women of our generation. They possess attributes such as compassion for life and drive for success, which sets the perfect example for what we should all be striving towards. We are as strong as ever and the opportunities in front of us our endless, therefore there is no better time than NOW to become a SuperWoman yourself.

Realize and love how AMAZING you are

Self-esteem can be hard to find sometimes, but every single person has a reason that they are awesome. Find what it is about yourself that you absolutely love and embrace your uniqueness. There is no better feeling than self-love! If you realize your potential and accept your flaws, then self-confidence will radiate through your veins!

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” -Oscar Wilde

Stay positive always

It’s very easy to get down on yourself or let one little thing ruin your day, but instead of sulking or becoming upset, just stay positive and super! There are hundreds of reasons to be happy regardless of how much you are going through. Find those reasons and focus on them! Life is short and not a single day should go to waste not enjoying yourself. It may be hard, but push through the negativity and force yourself to smile. After all, smiling is contagious.

Always keep your dream on your mind

You know your dream career? The one you would love to do every day if money, time, and anything else weren’t a factor? A superwoman can achieve whatever she puts her mind to when she works hard. Keeping your dream on your mind will keep you on track and motivated. Keep your eye on the prize so that whenever you get stressed or down you know it will be worth it. There is so much life ahead and there is no reason you should be spending it doing anything that makes you unhappy. Accept downfalls, as we all know that nothing will ever be perfect. Reach for the stars and know that your hard work WILL pay off!

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

Keep yourself healthy mentally and physically

Staying healthy is the number one most important thing to do for you, both physically and mentally. Working out is the key to physical health and well being, plus all that heart pumping releases endorphins, which, in turn, make you happier! Even 30 minutes of exercise four times a week is enough to help you look and feel better. Beyond your physical well being is your emotional well being too. Surrounding yourself with other driven and positive people will create a social bubble of contentment. Life is meant to be spent enjoying friendships, and great friends are those who would support you through anything. Having great friends helps you feel amazing emotionally, so tell those Debbie Downers to cheer up or hit the road and find friendships with those who truly care about you. Being a good friend is just as important, and helping out others is always a great way to cheer yourself up!

“People inspire you, or they drain you- Pick them wisely.” –Hans Hansen

Stick up for yourself!

Never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something, and never let anyone bring you down! Stick up for yourself, because you know how awesome you really are. Standing up for yourself will gain the respect you deserve. Trust your instincts, because no one knows you or your beliefs better than: you. Take lessons from your favorite superwoman, and be assertive when you need to be! A real superwoman would never back down for something she believes in.

“To stand up for yourself takes strength but to stand up for others takes courage.” -Unknown
