Pop Culture Blog: Spring Baby Boom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

It looks like we’re going to have a baby-booming spring! English royalty “Duchess Catherine” (umm, Kate Middleton) and Hollywood royalty Jessica Simpson have each announced that they have a bun in the oven!

The Internet (and Twitter feeds everywhere) exploded twice this week, first with People Magazine’s announcement that Jessica Simpson is pregnant again after having her first child (baby girl Maxwell) just seven months ago with fiancée Eric Johnson.

Ironically enough, in an interview shortly after she announced her first pregnancy, the celeb said that she and Johnson would hold off the wedding until after Maxwell’s birth. So…does this mean wedding bells are going to be on the backburner for another nine months?

No word yet on how the pregnancy will affect Jessica’s contract with Weight Watchers (she’s already been snapped shooting footage for commercials), but we at Her Campus wish her the best!

As for Will and Kate? Thank goodness the constant speculation has finally come to fruition. Baby rumors started circulating literally the day after the couple’s wedding in April 2011 and haven’t stopped since.

So, where do we stand now? Well while the news that Kate is pregnant with an heir to the English throne is exciting enough, but there is a special aspect to this too: if the baby is a girl, she will be the first royal female to inherit the throne directly (English law was only recently amended to allow for this).

Girl or boy, we have a while to go before England gets a new heir. Sources say that the Kate is only a few weeks along and isn’t expected to deliver until April at the earliest, just in time for the couple’s second anniversary!

Naturally, everyone is already placing bets on the gender and name of the royal baby. Me? I’m gonna go with the majority and guess that if it’s a girl, there’s bound to be some sort of Elizabeth/Diana combination. Congrats to Will and Kate!
