Everyone has had that mid-afternoon feeling when the only thing on your mind is a nice long nap. Next time it’s 2 p.m. and you don’t think you’re going to be able to last through your last lecture of the day, skip the energy drink and go for one of these energy boosting foods.
Why should you skip the energy drink?
All of the artificial flavoring and excessive amounts of caffeine found in energy drinks may give you a temporary boost midday, but they will not help you in the long run. Energy drinks that advertise to have no caffeine usually will use a substitute very similar to caffeine that will have same crash that caffeine can cause when it wears off. Energy drinks that are labeled “no crash” really do still have a crash but the claim is referring to a no sugar crash because the drink uses artificial sweeteners instead of sugar.
What to eat instead next time
1. Bananas: Two bananas can give you enough energy to get through a tough ninety minute workout so they would definitely be able to get you through your boring lecture. Bananas also will give you that extra energy boost without the crash you get from caffeine.
2. Oatmeal: Oatmeal is a great source of carbohydrates, fiber, and protein while staying very low in fat. This protein helps make you feel full longer while the carbohydrates provide you with a great source of sustainable energy.
3. Almonds: Magnesium, the mineral that plays a large part in the production in the energy in your body, can be found in almonds. Like oatmeal, a handful will leave you feeling full and they would be an easy snack to throw in your backpack when you head out for class.
4. Green Vegetables: Leafy greens are rich in magnesium and iron, which will provide you with a great boost in energy. Dark greens can be great in any type of salad and will leave you feeling energized all day long.
5. Water: As surprising it may seem, water is essential to avoiding fatigue and getting worn down throughout the day. You should be sure to keep a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day to make sure you get all the water you need. Stay hydrated and you will be able to stay alert.
