Startup Helps Students Find the Coolest Jobs on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

It’s hard when you’re looking for a part-time job on campus and you’re not having any luck. It can be frustrating when you’re looking for cash and you are tired of asking your parents for money. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

The recent website startup “Campus Job” was brought to U of I in fall 2014, and it is basically an online marketplace that connects students with part-time employers on various college campuses.

“We’ve got the coolest part-time jobs that a student can have, from Brand Ambassador roles for beer companies to freelance photography jobs for Fortune 500s, to bartending gigs at the best bars on campus,” the site boasts.

According to an article published on Elite Daily this past October, “It’s live at every single college and grad school in the US, 100 percent free for students and has listings ranging from Fortune 500s, startups and local businesses.”

“I applied for a position through the website and I was interviewed within days,” Morgan Raphael, a senior public relations major at Penn State, told magazine “The Odyssey.” “Campus Job is a great resource for everyone, and I seriously encourage everyone to take advantage of it.”

Upon arriving at the site, new members are asked to sign up, requesting student email address and name. From there, you can complete a profile based on whether you’re a part-time or full-time student, your major, class standing, GPA, extracurricular activities on campus, previous work experience, Greek affiliation, hobbies and your resume.

Once you have completed your profile, a certain amount of job listings at your campus, in our case, U of I, will come up. In addition to the site simply notifying you of specific jobs, it offers extensive, useful information about each job available, such as whether it is paid, under which category the job is (internet, start-up, non-profit, marketing and advertising, entertainment, apparel and fashion, consumer goods, etc.), responsibilities, qualifications and compensation.

What makes this site unique is that instead of having to search through pages of out-of-reach jobs that are unrealistic or just don’t fit your personality, the site gathers enough personal information about you to lead you directly to jobs that will be of value to you.

Obviously, working a part-time job at Espresso Royale or the UGL will earn you some extra money, but these aren’t necessarily jobs that will prepare you for what you really want to do post graduation.

With Campus Job, however, you’re being matched with part-time work, such as paid internships at well regarded, popular companies, that will be beneficial not only to your resume, but to you as an upcoming professional. With these jobs, you’ll be getting the experience you’ll need to be successful in your line of work in the future.

Molly Messner, a junior at Illinois, said: “As an R.A., I’m already busy to begin with. But I’ve been wanting to find part-time work that will advance me in some way, so I’m so glad that Campus Jobs has come to U of I!”
