We have entered the month of September. With fall upon us, it can seem like the super fall fanatics are trying to stuff the autumn season down our throats. New fall flavors at Starbucks, fall clothes, fall decorations and fall activities are bombarding our social media feeds. I love the fall months as much as other people, but I’m not willing to let summer go so easily. Read more to find out how to stretch out those last few warm days!
Sit in the sunshine
Grab a blanket, some friends, put together a picnic, and go sit outside! The quad at UIUC is as good a place as any to relax in the sunshine. By now the sun rays shouldn’t be as harsh and the slightly cooler weather might be more inviting. Getting some fresh air and enjoying some good food with friends is the best way to treat yourself! If you have one, I suggest bringing a hammock as well. There are plenty of trees that you can hook it up to and it makes for a really relaxing experience!
Explore a new nature preserve
If you have never been, check out Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve in Mahomet, IL! It’s about a 20 minute drive from campus and it is a great way to spend a free day outside. There are biking and walking paths, a botanical garden, places to fish and lots of green open space. If you’re a fan of nature, this is for you. With the weather still warm, take advantage of this opportunity! If you’re wanting to stay on campus, a great place to visit is the Arboretum or Japan House, both of which are on S. Lincoln Ave. I have been to both several times and really love the calm atmosphere.
Have a pool day + dinner party
If you know a friend who lives in a building with a pool, suggest having a pool day! Nothing beats playing mermaids as adults in college, right? Bust out that old summer tote bag and fill it with towels, sunscreen and snacks. Bring the party back to your place and host a group dinner. Everyone can contribute to make it a potluck-style gathering. Find new recipes to try or make it a themed evening that everyone has to stick to. Even if you’re in a dorm, most buildings have communal kitchens that have the equipment to make this idea work! Cooking together can be a really great bonding experience, especially if you’re within a new group of friends.
Enjoy the end of the summer season!
