Tori’s Top Ten: Must See Summer Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

This summer, much anticipated movies will be hitting the theaters left and right, and, in an attempt to keep you in the loop, here is a list of ten must-see movies that you shouldn’t pass up.

1. Star Trek: Into Darkness – For those of us who have seen the first of the films based on the TV series, the second installment of Star Trek is something that we have been waiting for. The newest of the films is released May 17 of this year and brings back Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock as Kirk tries to live up to the legacy of his father while Spock attempts to keep the rebel in line in order to defeat the Romulan.

2. Epic – On May 24, an all-star cast of Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Amanda Seyfried, Pitbull, Beyonce Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, and Colin Farrell take to the screen in a 20th Century Fox animated comedy about a girl transported into a forested world in which she must help fight the battle between good and evil to save both their world and ours.

3. Hangover Part 3 – With the return of Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Justin Bartha and Ed Helms and even with the addition of Melissa McCarthy, the “wolf pack” faces yet another series of unremembered, yet memorable, events, but this time, it is without the bachelor party. In fact, on its release May 24, all bets are off.

4. The Internship – After their roles together in Wedding Crashers, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson join forces once again, except this time, age is a factor as they face competition with younger, tech-savvy individuals for an internship with Google. The film will be released on June 7 this year, and if it’s anything like Wedding Crashers, it’ll be worth seeing.

5. This Is The End – As probably one of the most star-studded films this summer, This Is The End focuses primarily on that, the end of the world. The draw? The cast entirely consists of celebrities playing themselves, including Emma Watson, James Franco, Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Jason Segal, Jonah Hill, and Kevin Hart along with many others. The movie will be released on June 12 of this year.

6. Monsters University – After a long, 12-year wait, the second Monsters Inc. movie will finally be released on June 21, 2013. However, this time, we are brought into the past when Mike Wisowski and James P. Sullivan (Sully) attended college, and we see the rocky start to their relationship.

7. White House Down – Starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, this film takes yet another take on an attack of the White House, this time involving innocent bystanders who just so happened to be touring it at the time. The film will be released on June 28.

8. Despicable Me 2 – On July 3, 2013, three years after the original release date, the second Despicable Me film will hit theaters with the return of voices Steve Carell, Kristin Wiig, and Miranda Cosgrove. Gru, a previous villain, takes his hand at doing good in helping attempt to take down a super criminal.

9. Lone Ranger – With popular film personalities Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, the Lone Ranger will appear in theaters on July 3 as a retelling of the classic stories following the life John Reid and his rise to the legend of justice.

10. Grown Ups 2 – Three years after the initial release of Grown Ups, a second is set to release on July 12 this year. With returns of the original four friends and additions of Aly Michalka, David Henrie, Jackie Sandler, and even Taylor Lautner, this movie will take Lenny and his family to the town where he and his friends grew up, and, this time, the kids will teach the grown-ups.

So there you have it, ten movies that you will not want to pass up this summer.  Happy Watching!
