What To Watch On YouTube

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

One of my favorite things to do in my down time is watch videos on Youtube. I am literally addicted and why wouldn’t I be? You can find anything from learning how to make a candle from an orange peel to old Whitney Huston videos all in one place. Who wouldn’t love that?

One thing that I have learned in the past year or so is that many people turn Youtube into a source of revenue, a platform to speak to, educate and entertain millions of people on a daily and weekly basis. Yes, if you did not know, Youtube is not just a place for viral videos, for some people it is the door to mega success. Most Youtubers treat their channels like their own private TV station and use it to broadcast to their loving fans. Often times I look forward to these video uploads and webisodes as anxiously as I would an episode of a primetime TV show and so do a lot of people. Here are some of the Youtube channels I just can’t live without!

Fashion

·       WendysLookBook **Picture**: Wendy Nyguen is a very popular Youtube fashion guru. She uploads pairing videos to showcase the multiple ways you can wear key pieces of clothing that are currently trending in fashion.  I really love the overall quality of her videos. Each one is shot by a professional videographer and features multiple angles, outfit changes and locations. You can catch Wendy on Youtube, follow her on Pintrest or at get a detailed look at her style on Wendyslookbook.com.

·       Fabulasityisme: This woman is a hair, weave and wig expert so if you need styling ideas you should definitely take a peek at her channel. I have learned a lot about curling and styling my own hair from her. She also does very cute outfit of the day or night videos, along with make-up tutorials.

·       Bronzegoddess01: The Bronze Goddess is someone I have been following on youtube since the beginning of my college career. One of my favorite segments of hers is the Thrift Hauls. She shows you how to take your cheap thrift finds and integrate them into your wardrobe to create something truly beautiful. She is a self-proclaimed cheap-anista! She also does a segment called ‘The Strawberry Letter’. This is taken from the segment made popular from Steve Harvey’s morning radio station. He devote Youtube subscribers, also known as subbies, send her letters asking for advice and she tells it like it is!

Entertainment

·       Dormtainment *Picture*: If you are looking to laugh, you must watch some of Dormtainment’s videos. Every Sunday these six former college roommates upload a new video, some of them make social commentary, others are just silly but they all will make you laugh. My favorite video of theirs is a spoof of MTV’s hit show Catfish. You can find all of their videos on Youtube but also on their website Dormtainment.com.

·       Jenna Marbles : Jenna Marbles is absolutely hilarious. Her videos and vlogs cover anything from “What guys think about during sex” to “What girls do while their driving”. You can catch her videos every Wednesday

·       Issa Rae *Picture*: Issas Rae might be the most talented person on the Youtube platform. Her web series Awkward Black Girl has catapulted her to fame. She is a feature on BET’s ‘Don’t Sleep’ and was recently on the cover of Essence magazine. But she hasn’t stopped. Some of her latest work includes her new web series ‘How Men Become Dogs’ and ‘Roomieloverfriends’ and a music commentary segment called ‘Ratchet piece theater’, where she does a satirical analysis of her favorite rap songs.

Pop Culture and Celebrity News

·       Kidfury *Picture*: Now I must warn you, KidFury is not for the faint of heart. I repeat he does not hold back! His commentary on celebrity gossip and news is biting but most of all it is hilarious and HONEST. He gives it to you straight and you have to respect that. He also writes a celebrity news blog on sofurious.com, sells his own fan gear and also has a new podcast called ‘The Read’ where he and his co-host Crissle give you hot topics, answer fan mail and Read whoever has been getting on their nerves.

·       Kingsley– Another pop culture commentary that I love is Kinglsey. I first fell in love with his overexposed videos. Have you ever been tired of hearing about something? Be it Kim K’s pregnancy or Lindsey Lohans court dates? Well in ‘Overexposed’ Kingsely puts an end to these worn out subjects by ranting about them. At the end of each video you will say “Finally someone agreed that we need to stop talking about this!!”
