Every rom-com ends up with the girl getting the guy she had wanted throughout the plot of the movie, and every Valentine’s Day, I hope to be that girl. But unfortunately for me, every Valentine’s day I find out that I am not. It is easy to feel sad to be single on a day celebrating relationships and love, but the love celebrated on this day doesn’t have to be romantic. This Valentine’s Day, it’s my goal to prioritize self-love and the love I have for my friends and family, and not spend it dwelling on being sad.

Relationships don’t have to be romantic

Valentine’s Day is the day to celebrate long-lasting relationships by going on fancy dinner dates or exchanging gifts, but it doesn’t have to strictly be like this. You don’t need a relationship to feel content with your life. I know it may be hard to see this, especially on a day dedicated to love, but it is true! The one person you absolutely need to express your love for this year is yourself!

Adding a relationship to your life is not always the best choice for everyone. There are so many reasons for this too, whether it be the wrong time, the wrong person, or even simply that you are not interested in having this type of commitment. But no matter the reason, it is perfectly okay! I for one am satisfied with being single this Valentine’s Day and still plan on celebrating.

Celebrating a different way

If you are single for Valentine’s Day this year, you should still celebrate! There are plenty of different ways to have a great day, and you can do this by practicing self-care. When I like to have a Valentine’s Day alone, I love to put on a face mask, order Chipotle and watch my current Netflix show. Currently, it’s Grey’s Anatomy for the second time. Doing things for yourself is a great way to express self-love! Relax, or do something you’ve been meaning to do, but haven’t found the time for.

Another great way to spend Valentine’s Day if you aren’t in a relationship is by making it Galentine’s Day! The opportunities are endless with this one, but simply spend the night with your friends! You can go out for a nice dinner, hit the bars, or even have a nice girls’ night in. Show your friends some love and have fun spending time together!

self-love

Self-love isn’t only important when it comes to this special holiday… It always is! It is so important to see yourself as your own individual and not just someone alone and waiting for their other half. Spend this Valentine’s Day, along with every day of the year, expressing love to yourself and to those you care about most.
