PNM Tips and Tricks: The Low-Down on Sorority Recruitment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

As eager freshmen enter through the Sample Gates upon first arriving to IU, most students have no idea what to expect. However, most IU freshmen can agree that Greek life is extremely prevalent on campus.

The Panhellenic community at Indiana University is notorious for bringing students friends for life and endless activities among the Greeks. With 22 social chapters currently on campus, it is no surprise that young women who are eager to pledge themselves to a sisterhood often underestimate how difficult the recruitment process actually is. HCIU put together a list of tips and tricks for those who are thinking about going through recruitment at IU in the near future.

First, dress warm. It’s usually somewhere between 15 and 30 degrees in the beginning weeks of January in Bloomington. However, that can change. You never know with the Indiana weather! Looking cute for your potential new sisters is always a concern – and let’s face it, confidence is key- but keeping all of your toes outweighs showing off your style. Layer up and work those winter boots!

Second, bring an emergency kit. It is wise that alongside your white cards and gloves, you stuff some necessities in your bag as well. Water, snacks, Band-Aids, lip balm, gum and perfume are just a few things that are useful during recruitment. The days are longer than you’d think so make sure to bring anything that you think will help keep you comfortable and/or boost morale.

Next, keep your opinions to yourself. Girls may want to trash-talk some houses and brag about how they got invited back to others, but don’t reciprocate! You never know who is listening and how they might feel after a round, so try to keep comments to yourself or to close friends behind closed doors. You could get in serious trouble if the wrong ears hear you! Remember, everyone has different goals and vibes.

Finally, have fun. It’s cheesy and cliche, but throughout the long days in the bitter cold you get to opportunity to meet hundreds of intelligent, unique, fun-loving women who want to get to know YOU. Enter the experience with open arms and be yourself wherever you go! In the end, you will hopefully join a sisterhood that will make all of the awkward conversations and sprints in between houses worth it.
