Q&A with First Time Delta Gamma Rider Kayce Doogs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

Delta Gamma placed first in qualifications. Cheer them on (or watch out for them)  at the Women’s Race, which begins 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, April 15) at Armstrong Stadium.

HCIU: So this is your first year riding on the team, what do you love best about the team and what are the best rewards of being a cycling superstar?
Kayce: What I love best about the team is how encouraging and dedicated everybody is. We all spend and give up a lot of free time to devote ourselves to the bike team, but it’s because we all love it and our each working hard together for one goal at the end. I think that’s what is the most rewarding thing about excelling in cycling — the fact that you aren’t just in this for yourself, you’re out there winning for your team and your house.

HCIU: Seeing how close you guys are, does your team have any weird or funny things you guys do at practice or good luck rituals before you ride in the pre-Little 500 races?
Kayce: We just spend a lot of time together outside of practice to become closer and trust one another. When you’re out on the track doing exchanges and hard efforts, trust is a huge factor in success. We watch old race tapes a lot to see what to do and what not to do; that always gets us pumped up and excited to go out there and ride. These pre-little 5 races (called spring series events) are just a way to have fun and see where your fitness and talent levels are in comparision with the other teams. Winning and getting points in all of these are fun, but when it really comes down to it we are truly training for the real race in the end.

HCIU:
It sounds like you guys are really determined and committed to the team, how excited are you to see all of your hard work pay off? I know your pair for the race, Sigma Nu also came in first with you in qualifications, how awesome would it be if both of your teams came in first come race day?
Kayce: It is hard to believe that race day is almost here, but yes we are all definitely ready and excited to finally perform in what we have been training so hard all year for. And yea, it was great to see SNU win the pole position in quals as well. It’s definitely helped get both of our houses pumped up and ready for the two big races. If we both came out with a win, that would call for some celebration, that’s for sure!
