Top 10 Celebrities to Follow on Twitter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

Whose tweets do you like to keep up with? I asked this question to Collegiettes™ all around IU’s campus to find out which “tweeting” celebrities make you laugh, think, and smile. Here are your most popular responses!

1.    @BritneySpears
It’s no surprise that so many college students love to follow one of the world’s favorite pop stars. In fact, most of us grew up listening to Britney and trying to copy her amazing dance moves. Although we can assume most of what she says on Twitter is filtered through a lot of publicists and managers, Britney sends her tweets to her fans in way that makes us feel connected to such a huge star.

Recent Tweet: “Can’t believe tonight was even real! Forever grateful to my dedicated, wonderful fans – y’all made this evening possible. Love u! –Brit”

2.    @PerezHilton
Let’s face it. Celebrity gossip is never going to get old, and Perez Hilton is the guy to always keep us in the loop with what we need to know. “I like to follow [Perez] because he always posts follows ups on his website” senior Emily Rollins said. By giving us links to his blogs and expressing his personal views on current events, Perez gives us a sense of connection to his world.

Recent Tweet: “Celebs Who Changed Their Names http://perez.ly/pkOLZwDid you know all those??? Surprising!”

3.    @TaylorSwift13
America’s favorite girl-next-door, Taylor Swift, is another one of your favorite celebrities to follow. “I love the fact that [her] Twitter makes her seem very down to Earth, like the average non-famous person. It’s great to see her opinions on events and what emotions she goes through” junior Lauren Goldeen said. Taylor is so sweet and real on her profile, and since she is around our age, many of us find it comforting to relate to her.

Recent Tweet: “I got to say ‘peace up, A-town down’ in atlanta then @UsherRaymondIVcame out and sang ‘Yeah!’ with me. I’m thinking ‘is this real life?’”

4.    @RainnWilson
Better know as “Dwight” from The Office, Rainn Wilson is a great celeb to follow if you are ever having a bad day. Rainn uses his Twitter to express his silly, random sense of humor. It’s almost like hearing his one-liners from the show, only this is unscripted!

Recent Tweet: “I saw a sign that said “Deaf Children Drive Carefully”. I didn’t know they drove at all.”

5.     @NicoleRichie
We look at her for fashion and beauty tips, but Nicole Richie is also very relatable to her followers on Twitter. In fact, many of you said that you love to follow her because her sense of humor is close to that of a lot of college girls on campus. She tweets regularly and always stays classy with what she says– an all around Twitter role model.

Recent Tweet: “Life is crazy and unpredictable… my bangs are going to the left today.”

6.    @StephenAtHome (Stephen Colbert)
Do I even need to explain this one? For many Colbert Report viewers, TV personality Stephen Colbert’s tweets simply keep us laughing most of the time. Senior Margaret Ely said, “I like that he tweets in his persona, like he is on the show. It’s incredibly funny”. Even on his Twitter feed, Colbert maintains his satirical alter ego, making his followers laugh and learn about his opinions.

Recent Tweet: “Scientists have found a way to encode secret messages in bacteria. So keep it up, disgusting slobs – it’s a matter of national security.”

7.    @BethennyFrankel
One of our favorite New York “Housewives” is also a fun and real celebrity to follow on Twitter. “I started following her because of the show, and I just like her,” junior Sarah Baker said. He is our new favorite cutie to follow on Fox’s Glee, so of course, many of you said you enjoy following Darren Criss on Twitter as well. The fact that Darren always thanks and retweets his fans only makes him even cuter. “He tweets at his fans and interacts with them really well,” Goldeen said.
