We Think You Should Go To Class, Here’s Why

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

We’ve all been there. You wake up for your 8 a.m. class only to see that it’s still dark outside, and surely cold as well. No one in their right mind would willingly leave their cozy bed to walk the frozen tundra of campus in November, much less dreaded stairs of Ballantine Hall. So why even bother trying?
While going to class in the middle of the semester may seem to be a tiring and senseless effort, I can promise you that it does have its benefits! Here are five reasons that you should go to class and beat the pre-Thanksgiving break blues:

1.     To get your money’s worth: Or at least your parents’ money’s worth. Still, think of how much you are paying to attend this amazing university. Despite the state of the economy right now, you are still able to afford the incredible opportunity of being an IU student. Shouldn’t you make it worth every penny? Each time you debate skipping class, remember how much time and work your family and you have invested in order to get you to college. Hopefully this will change your mind.
2.     To save your grade: Many times, a great portion of your course grade lies solely in your attendance of class. How easy is that? So, whether or not you are struggling in a class, a sure way to earn some points is to simply sit at a desk for an hour. So at the end of every class, remind yourself that your grades will reflect this willpower.
3.     To save more time: Even when class seems like a waste of your time, the exact opposite is probably more likely. Going to class can save you loads of time on homework and studying. How, you ask? Think of all of the times you have missed class and spent hours trying to figure out how to start a homework assignment. Listening and absorbing the material that the instructor goes over in class can eliminate this unnecessary struggle by giving you a clearer idea of what to do. This leaves you more time to indulge in what’s really important in life, (i.e. a good night’s sleep)!
4.     To socialize: No, you aren’t always able to talk during class, but making connections with your peers before and after class is an extremely important and exciting part of the college experience. Building relationships within your major not only strengthens your networking opportunities, but it can make you a more sociable, well-rounded person. All in all, getting up to see a few friendly faces gives you a nice change of scenery that will almost always be worth your time.
5.     To feel good about yourself: Every Collegiette™ has a personal goal for what she wants to achieve on her journey through college. Envision this goal everyday and realize that each class you attend is one step closer to your success. This will give you a more optimistic attitude towards school that will make you feel like the important and promising woman that you are!

While going to class early on a Monday morning may not sound like loads of fun, I guarantee it is worth your time. So, instead of trying to think up some valid excuses to skip out, remember these five guidelines and get your butt to class! You won’t regret it!
