1. You actually enjoy going to your classes
Fashion is something that we are very passionate about and we love learning more about. There are no theories of fashion style classes but some classes can be very frustrating such as fundamentals of clothing construction.
2. Everyone thinks that your classes are easy
Just because everyone thinks that they know a lot about fashion, does not mean it is easy. There are so many new terms and aspects about the industry that I did not know before most of my classes. Although our classes are not technical in design, there are so many detail oriented things that we do for our classes that drive us crazy as with any other major.
3. You have little free time because you always are working on a fashion show, project, sewing samples etc.I cannot count how many times that I have had to say that I can’t go to Walmart, Giant Eagle, dinner, etc. due to hours spent in the sewing lab or working on my projects. Fashion shows are time consuming events because of having to round up models, dress rehearsals, designing the music for scenes, or even booking rooms for the events.
4. You dreaded having to buy your expensive sewing kit for class
nothing is more fun than having to buy a hundred dollars’ worth of products, fabric, thread, and tools for your mandatory sewing kit for class. The nice part is that it is your only sewing class and you have a sewing kit made for you for the rest of your life. Jo Ann fabrics offers student discounts plus they come out with new coupons every Thursday through email and text. Students can also borrow items from their family members to save on money and go in on items with other students to lessen the cost.
5. You have really expensive textbooks or access codes for your studio resources or group projects
The books are very pretty and cool but they can cost you anywhere from 45 to 250 dollars. The horrible part is when you have multiple fashion classes that have several books and access codes for them.
6. There are usually only a couple of guys in your class
Fashion classes are generally not the place to find your future husband or boyfriend, so that is one of the good parts about general education classes.
7. You have burned, poked, cut, or glued a part of your body working on a project
Our projects can vicious sometimes when you have to work on your creative projects. There is a huge chance that your friends will have no idea of what you actually have to do for them or they seem so complex.
8. People ask if you are going to work at the mall after graduation
No I do not want to go school for four years to just work at the mall the rest of my life
9. Professors from other departments, parents, and friends assume that you want to be a designer
Just because my major deals with fashion, does not mean that I want to design. Merchandisers work with designers to produce a product to sell for the brand.
10. Internships scare or excite you because you do not know if it’s going to be paid or not
Many fashion internships want you to do it for class credit and do not pay you for it at all. Many of them are in big cities where you have so many expenses. Many people have to get a job to help out with expenses in addition with their internship. Only some internships pay and those are highly competitive. Social Media Internships help though since it is through a smart phone or computer.
11. There is a big chance that you want to go work in New York or L.A after graduation
Most of the fashion houses that students dream of working at are in big cities and there tend to be more fashion jobs in big cities. Most fashion magazines, personal relations firms, advertising agencies, modeling agencies, and corporate offices are in places like new York plus there is nothing better than getting to branch out from your home town.
12. You have a special bond with other fashion majors         Â
You know there are some classes that only fashion majors take that no other major take and you all feel the certain struggle that comes with them. Fashion show production is usually a class that everyone wants to take or has an opinion on.
13. you dress up more frequently for class than other students and you get judged when you don’t
Just because you are a fashion major, does not mean that you have to dress up everyday. After all, you are in college and not going to a fashion house for lunch. Many people do love to dress up for class though, and we do it more frequently than other majors.
14. You love what you do and cannot wait to go and work in the fashion industry
I love college and am excited for the rest of schooling and I’m excited to get know more about what I love to. I would love to work at corporate office in a big city and get to do what I love everyday. I have wanted to do this since I was five years old!
