Living in a Residence Hall is at the core of the college experience, but it’s often hard to call your tiny room “home” at first. Even if you have lived on-campus before, settling in can be a stressful time! Her Campus is here to help you improve your on-campus living experience with these 5 tips!
1. Decorate with Memories
Putting up those picture frames or movie posters may feel like a daunting task, but surrounding yourself with familiar faces will make you feel more at ease in your new home! As the semester goes on, you will make new friends whose faces you can add to collages and bulletin boards! Mementos are also great conversation starters with your roomie or anyone who visits.
2. Leave Your Door Open
It can be uncomfortable living next door to complete strangers, but if you say “hi” and find out their interests, your neighbors won’t be strangers anymore! Getting involved in your community by arranging floor dinners or attending a CA program are the best ways to make friends in your new home!
3. Don’t Forgo the Curtains
Bringing things like curtains, rugs, or lamps can make your white walled room feel more warm and welcoming! Most people have these decor items at home, but don’t think to bring them to their school year abode. Adding a domestic touch will put you at ease after a long day of classes!
4. Choose a Scent!
Obviously, you can’t light a candle in your on-campus housing to make your room smell great, but plug-in or spray air fresheners can make all the difference to you and your guests! Choosing a scent that will represent “home” to you throughout the semester is a small touch that will mean a lot!
5. Don’t Forget Groceries!
Although meal plans are required for all on-campus residents, grocery shopping is still a must! Make sure you stock up on your favorites during the first few weeks of school because comfort food is the best food.
College is a time to make memories and practice independence, do these in a comfortable, inspiring space that allows you to have exactly the experience you want!
