70’s- “Simple Man” “Vienna” “My Sweet Lord”
For the ’70s, I simply could not pick one favorite. These 3 are certainly not the end of my list for this decade but most definitely at the top. Each song has a deeper meaning to me. “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd feels like something to live by. The drum and guitar combo go beyond just hearing- I feel it throughout my body and it feels like therapy for my soul. All three of these songs feel like therapy for my soul. “Vienna” by Billy Joel is like reassurance that everything is going to be alright and that it’s okay to take my time with life because I’m still young. Another song that will always make me think of my mom- “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison feels like I’m drifting off to heaven. I feel safe listening to this song and for a couple of minutes, the world is okay.
80’s- “Your Love”
80’s pop songs like these are what I grew up on. Every trip to the grocery store, my mom had her playlist ready to go for us to sing along to. “Your Love” by The Outfield is just one of many songs that I will love forever from the 1980’s. The lyrics carry more emotion and meaning than what I get from most pop music today. Not to mention the guitar and drums- it’s something I can feel AND hear, if that makes sense.
Indie- “Brian’s movie”
Peach Pit is SUCH a talented band and one of my favorites! They write their own songs, and their live performances are incredible. One of my favorites by them is “Brian’s Movie”, it’s catchy with a cool guitar thing happening in the background. It was tough to pick a favorite as all of their songs have a deeper meaning or a story to tell with satisfying vocals, guitar, and bass to match.
Country- “Charleston Girl”
Tyler Childers is an INCREDIBLE artist and I highly recommend all of his songs. I personally love “Charleston Girl” because of its catchy chorus, Childers’ vocals, and the twang and soul in the music. It’s the type of song that makes you feel like it’s a Saturday night and you’re having the time of your life- it’s energizing and makes you want to shout the lyrics driving down the highway.
pop- “edge of midnight”
I am in love with Miley Cyrus’ “Plastic Hearts” album! Her voice is so versatile and fits the retro vibe of Stevie Nicks, doing “Edge of Midnight” justice. The song is like a revival of Fleetwood Mac with the perfect balance of modern pop. Listening to it makes me feel like a badass.
