Finally! We’ve almost made it to the end of the semester and summer is starting, but we have to get through finals. It’s almost like a consequence of getting a summer break- you’ve spent the last 5 months reading and studying non-stop so here’s a nice 3-month break, but first cram in some more studying. I think we all get a little high-strung and tense as we prep for finals because a lot rides on getting the grades we need. During this time, it’s important to take good care of yourself so you can do your best. Here are 3 things I recommend trying during your finals.
Spend time outside
It’s been too long since we’ve had decent sunshine- the weather is finally warming up and you need a boost of vitamin D! You will feel so good getting fresh air and a clear mind. Stepping outside and breaking from your routine can sometimes be refreshing and help to get you focused!
Eat and sleep well
We are what we eat (and how long we sleep). Our bodies need energy and rest to function properly. If you are stocking up on fat, greasy foods, and energy drinks while studying, you’re going to crash. Although I’m not suggesting you cut out all of your normal snacks, you need to find a balance of fruits, veggies, protein, and carbs. Try adding some extra healthy choices to your meals and drink lots of water!
Equally important is a good 8+ hours of sleep. I think we all know that if you’re exhausted, you won’t do as well compared to when you’re fully rested. So, make it a priority to set aside your distractions, get your bedtime routine down, and relax- preferably before midnight!
Reduce phone time
Although it can be a nice break to mindlessly scroll through TikTok, you’re still straining your eyes! Whether you’re reading from a physical book or reviewing notes on your laptop your eyes are being strained from focusing on what’s directly in front of you. When you take a mental break from work, your body needs a break as well. So instead of picking up your phone, get up and stretch, go for a walk, or try some yoga. You might feel even more focused when you return to studying!
