It’s All Greek to Me: The Move into Hamlin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

It was recently announced that all of the Greek floors will move into Hamlin next year, and this will become the permanent home for these organizations for the foreseeable future. I attended the Panhel meeting where this announcement was made, and I heard many conflicting thoughts about the move. So, let’s talk about it. Here are the pros and cons about the new all-Greek Hamlin!

Pro: It will be easier to organize mixers and other Greek events!

Not only will living in the same building make communication between our chapters easier, but it will also allow us to easily organize events within Hamlin itself. And, who doesn’t love mixers and extra events? We will have more opportunity to meet other Greeks, who we may not have known before. (And take lots of pictures with lots of sorority squats.)

Con: Greek floors in Campion will have to move.

Okay, so this part of it definitely isn’t great for the four Greek organizations currently in Campion. Leaving a floor really is like leaving a home. And no one wants to carry that many boxes. Luckily, John Carroll Res Life will be orchestrating this move for those affected. It’s a small consolation, but at least they are trying to make it as comfortable as possible for the floors moving. But hey, at least you won’t see any sorority girls trying to lift couches from Campion to Hamlin. I don’t think that would end well for anyone. All in all, I’m sure everyone will work hard to make the new floors in Hamlin just as wonderful.

Pro: Res Life will pay to paint the new floors.

So, this is pretty exciting! Though some organizations will be inconvenienced by the move, Res Life has stated they will pay to paint the new Greek floors. This is a big deal, because painting definitely doesn’t come cheap. Maybe you want your floor to look exactly like it did in Campion, or maybe you want to switch things up a bit? The choice is yours, but at least you won’t have to increase dues in order to cover the cost! (And maybe, while they’re at it, they should probably pay for Chi O’s stolen TV as well. Just a side thought.)

Con: Hamlin may get a little crazy.

I mean this in the most literal sense, with no alcohol or party jokes implied. Have you been around any sorority or fraternity member during recruitment, initiation, council selection, or Greek Week? Do you notice that all of those things tend to happen at the same time for each Greek organization? Well if you have, you will know we all tend to get a little stressed out. Now, let’s multiply that stress by the entire Greek community in one building. Hopefully, everyone will work together to harness that stress for good, but I could see things getting a little crazy during those rough weeks. Though, just as long as we don’t send out ridiculous emails to our chapters that go viral on the internet, I think we will be just fine.

Pro: Our (already close) Greek community will become a closer, unified group.

Okay, this may sound a little cheesy, but our JCU Greek community is one of the best Greek communities out there. We may all have our own chapters, but everyone tends to have close friends or bonds with members of other chapters too! All of us genuinely care about the other chapters on campus and go out of our way to support each other (whether that is attending each other’s philanthropy events or a bunch of Betas singing to the sororities on their Founders’ Day). Living in Hamlin together will serve to promote even more unity in our Greek community.

Like it or not, we will all be moving into Hamlin together next year. So, let’s focus on the positives and embrace this move!
