At the beginning of the school year, it can be hard to adjust from having all this free time to yourself during the summer to being bogged down by schoolwork as you return to classes and school life. So, here is a short list of shows you can watch as a way to relax in the limited free time you now have.

Madam Secretary

The show is about Elizabeth McCord played by Tea Leoni, who was previously a CIA analyst but left her job for ethical reasons and became a professor. She becomes appointed as Secretary of State at the request of the president because of her trustworthy persona and lack of political finesse. Elizabeth pushes forward with international diplomatic relations, bypassing protocol, and dealing with office and national issues while also navigating her home life with her supportive husband and three kids as she steps into this new position. All 6 seasons of this show can be watched with a Netflix subscription. I give it a 5 out of 5 because this political drama captured my interest from the first episode and was able to hold it until the show ended.

Hawaii Five-O (2010)

This show is a new version of the previous classic Hawaii Five-O, starring Alex O’Loughlin as Detective Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Detective Daniel Williams. Detective Steve McGarrett runs an elite task force that answers only to the Governor of Hawaii and has full immunity and the means to take down criminals who disrupt the peace in the Hawaiian Islands. They deal with crimes ranging from robberies and kidnappings to murder and terrorism. The best part of the show for me is the banter and interpersonal relations between the teams that allow them to not only get the job done, but also be a family that loves and protects each other. All 10 seasons of this show can be watched through a Paramount+ subscription through Amazon Prime Video. I give it a 4 out of 5 because this is a very entertaining cop show. At times it can get boring but the storylines for each season always leave you entertained and wanting more.

The Witcher

This show follows three characters and their intertwined destinies: Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia who is a “witcher,” defined as a magically enhanced monster hunter, Freya Allan as Ciri the crown princess of Cintra with Elder Blood, and Anya Chalotra, Yennefer of Vengerberg who is a quarter-elf sorceress. Both Ciri and Geralt of Rivia are linked to each other by destiny through the “Law of Surprise” before Ciri’s birth, however the two have never met before. Once the two meet each other, Geralt has to protect and teach Ciri to fight against her enemies to prevent her Elder Blood and magical powers from being used for malicious reasons that could destroy her and the world. There are 3 seasons so far and more to come, so you can watch it with a Netflix subscription. I give this show a 4 out of 5 because this fantasy drama is very interesting and engaging, however, it can become confusing, especially in the first season so you have to pay attention.

These 3 shows are my current favorites to watch because they can capture your attention completely so you can forget about school and enjoy the show. I hope you can be entertained with these shows as the school year begins. Good luck with the new semester and make sure to get some free time for yourself.
