Fall is a wonderful time for fashion- you can finally break out the boots, the jackets, and the layering skills that you’ve been in hiding all summer! Of course fashion is personal to everyone, but here are some trends to think about for this season.

1. Fall Colors

If you’re an avid follower of fashion, you may know of Pantone’s Colors of the Year, which are released at the beginning of each year, and seem to pop up in stores and magazines and on websites almost immediately. However, there are always seasonal color trends as well. Some colors with rising popularity for autumn include: pistachio green (likely a toned-down ode to the neon trend from this past summer), lavender (which I love with all my heart), and gold. These are in addition to the fall classics: earth tones (olive, khaki, rust, brown), neutrals (grey, white, black, and tan), jewel tones (emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue), and others like navy and maroon.

2. Cozying up those summer threads

No need to say goodbye to your summer wardrobe just yet! One of my favorite things about fall fashion is seeing how people take warm-weather clothing into the crisp autumn outdoors. Personally, I love pairing bright slip dresses and flowy skirts with chunky knit sweaters over top or turtlenecks underneath. For a more streetwear-based look, put a sweatshirt on top of your silky dress and pair it with sneakers! Another way to beat the cold is to wear high boots and socks with skirts and dresses.

3. Back to school

Fall is unequivocally the preppiest time of year. So feel free to break out those boss-lady blazers, plaid skirts, and collared shirts! I love dressing preppy-to-the-point-of-business-casual sometimes, because it honestly makes me feel like I have my entire life together. Of course, I always like to break up the business-ness of wide legged pants and a blazer with something fun, such as layered gold jewelry, a graphic tee, or my trusty Doc Martens.

4. Prints and Patches and Patterns, Oh My

Patterns such as plaid and houndstooth are very common in the fall. Recently, leopard print (and cheetah, and jaguar) has been taking the fashion world by storm. It is EVERYWHERE. Other emerging fall prints are what Marie Claire calls “moody florals” (floral prints in dark colors) as well as abstract graphics. If you don’t like to go all-out, consider buying a printed purse, belt, or even earrings that you can throw on to spice up a simple outfit. I have a cheetah print belt that I love to pair with tans and browns.

5. Layer on layer on layer

My favorite fall trend is layering, hands down. I have a growing collections of tight turtleneck shirts to pair under tanks tops, dresses, and sweaters for a pop of color/texture and a layer of warmth. An extra layer under your sweater and you might not even need a jacket! That’s the beauty of fall: it’s not yet freezing outside. Tights or leggings under dresses (or even pants, if you are really cold) is also a great way to avoid cold legs on a windy day.

6. Be comfortable and confident

The most important thing is to be comfortable in what you’re wearing. There’s no point in wearing a cute outfit if you immediately wish you had worn something else as soon as you step outside. Having said that, it can be exciting to experiment with what you wear and try new things. As long as you’re feeling great, you will look great. As a parting tip, check the temperature! Bring a scarf or jacket or umbrella if you are unsure of the weather outside. Getting a cold is neither fun nor chic!
