5 Clubs for JHU English and Writing Majors
So it’s your Freshmen year and you can’t wait to delve into clubs that finally focus on topics that interest you: reading, writing, and the literary world. Or, it’s your Junior year, you just came back from gallivanting abroad, and you realized you have to graduate in a year and you haven’t gotten involved in anything you can talk about in interviews or put on your resume. Either way, this article is for you. So enjoy these 5 clubs to get involved with for English and Writing Sems Majors.
1. The English Club: No brainer, right? It’s the official club of the English department. They screen movies once a month (based off of your favorite literary works) and usually have another social event as well. This October 31st they will be going to the Halloween Costume party at the beautiful Peabody Library. Want to get involved? Then email the president, Jessica Terekhov, at jterekh1@jhu.edu.
2. A Literary Magazine: The three largest literary magazines on campus are J.Magazine, Thoroughfare, and Zeniada. These clubs are a great choice if you want to get involved with editing or publishing. Also, these publications are a great opportunity for you to publish your own work! Thoroughfare is still accepting submissions of art, photographs, videos, poetry, and prose until October 18th. You can submit your work or get involved at http://web1.johnshopkins.edu/thoroughfare/ or email the President, Ruthie Portes, at thoroughfare.mag@gmail.com. Zeniada is also still accepting submissions for their Fall Magazine, and you can email them to get involved or submit at zeniadajhu@gmail.com. J.Magazine has already closed their submissions for their Fall magazine, but will also be accepting artwork and prose in the Spring and you can email them to get involved at jmagazine@gmail.com.
3. The News-Letter: This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you want to go into journalism, love chasing after a story, or taking an event and making it lifelike for people who weren’t there, then this is the club for you. This one is pretty heavy on the writing, but it can also score you free tickets to events. Plus, their office looks like a little cottage in the woods. Email chiefs@jhunewsletter.com to learn more or get involved.
4. The Black and Blue Jay: The Black and Blue Jay is Johns Hopkins’ only humor publication on campus. The staff meets Tuesdays at 7pm (check the Today’s Announcement and Facebook event for the place) and all are welcome to pitch ideas and write some comedic pieces! Check out their website at www.theblackandbluejay.com.
5. Her Campus JHU: Last, but certainly not least (because you wouldn’t be reading this article without it) is Her Campus! Her Campus is part of an international network of over 250 Her Campus chapters. It’s a great way to start gaining experience in magazine journalism, and Her Campus alums have gone on to be editors at giants like Hearst and Conde Nast! Current HC JHUers are interns at brands like ELLE, Sports Illustrated, Rodale Book Publishing, Macmillan, College Lifestyles, Miss Millenia, and Scholastic! Also, since Her Campus is a global brand, there are some added perks that the sponsors provide, such as media events and conferences in NYC, free Chipotle (we had it at our first meeting), and goody bags sent from Nationals with treats from our sponsors. To get involved, email the Editor-in-Chief at jhu@hercampus.com.
