1989 (TAYLOR’S VERSION!) Vault Songs Review & Analysis

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

The long-awaited re-release of 1989 is here and the whole world is so excited!!! 1989 is one of Taylor Swift’s most popular and iconic albums, so you know that we were all anxiously awaiting the arrival of Taylor’s Version. Unfortunately, this re-release only had 5 new tracks from the vault, but that’s still 5 new songs that we get to explore and commit to memory. Let’s dive in!

“Slut!”

Guys, let’s be real. We all thought this song was gonna be some upbeat banger. However, it was SO MUCH BETTER. This song is about how often Taylor gets slut shamed for dating “so many men” by the media, Hollywood, and basically everyone else on planet Earth before the Eras Tour started. Lyrics like “Love thorns all over this rose, I’ll pay the price you won’t” and “If they call me a slut, You know it might be worth it for once” prove that this is another one of Taylor’s responses to the slut shamers. She also does this with songs like “Blank Space” and “Shake It Off.” All in all, this song delivers the message it intended to, and it did a great job doing it. However, I don’t think that the overall tone and sound of the song fits the 1989 album vibe. What’s your take?

My rating (Super Swiftie): 9/10

Regular Swiftie: 7.5/10

Not a Swiftie: 8/10

Say Don’t Go

This song was so long-awaited and heartbreakingly good. “Say Don’t Go” is essentially about what it says it’s about, Taylor is in a relationship that she is trying to fix, but the other person is pulling away. This is rumored to be about Taylor and Harry Styles, BUT we probably won’t ever fully know. I think this song should’ve had a spot on the original album release, especially since it was teased for so long, but at least we have access to this banger now.

My rating (Super Swiftie): 10/10

Regular Swiftie: 10/10

Not a Swiftie: 7/10

Now That We Don’t Talk

This is probably my least favorite vault track from 1989. This one is also ~allegedly~ about Harry and how she is coming to terms with their breakup and not being able to remain friends post-breakup. I really liked the lyrics and the concept of the song, but something about this one was just not hitting for me. Just to incorporate a little Swift pun, it Hit Different, but in a bad way. I was a little disappointed by my feelings about this song since there are only 5 vault tracks, but I guess you can’t like all of them right? What do you think about this one?

My rating (Super Swiftie): 5/10

Regular Swiftie: 6.5/10

Not a Swiftie: 6.5/10

Suburban Legends

Here’s another one that I’m not in LOVE with, but still really like. “Suburban Legends” tells the story of a couple who grew up in a small town and tried to stay together no matter the odds. Unfortunately, by the end of the song, we can see that they did not succeed. There are many rumors about this song being about Taylor’s brief relationship with Conor Kennedy back in the summer of 2012. However, while there are many lyrics that hint that this is correct, there are more than a few that debunk this completely. An example of this not being true is the lyric, “I had the fantasy that our mismatched star signs would surprise the whole school” because Conor and Taylor are actually very compatible astrologically. This song really could just be a work of fiction like the Folklore Love Triangle, or it really could be about one of her previous relationships, I guess we’ll never know!

My rating (Super Swiftie): 7/10

Regular Swiftie: 7.5/10

Not a Swiftie: 5/10

Is It Over Now?

There are many words I could use to describe this song: iconic, relatable, perfect, but I think the most obvious adjective I should use is SAVAGE. We all know who this song is about (sorry Mr. Styles!) and did she not go IN on him?! This song goes into detail about how she was private about their split and her later hookups after the fact, but that he could not extend the same courtesy to her. Ouch! She also specifically refers to the blue dress she was wearing when leaving their trip early around New Year’s. Swift has talked about how anxious she was while dating Styles, and now we get to really understand why with “Is It Over Now?” Her anxiety with Styles is also clearly alluded to in “Out of The Woods,” which is also on the 1989 album. Anyway, this song is a clear banger and is so relatable for all of the people who have been in a similar situation in a relationship. Props to Taylor for finally airing out all of her feelings about Harry, I know I wouldn’t have waited 10 years!

My rating (Super Swiftie): 10/10

Regular Swiftie: 10/10

Not a Swiftie: 9/10

The analyses behind each song are all speculation, I am not saying that any of these are 100% true or accurate. All of the song content I mentioned is purely speculation! I hope you enjoyed this article about the new songs, and please tell us what you think about each track. We wanna hear your opinion too!
