Body Positivity in Women: Making a Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

So many young women today struggle with how they view their bodies, especially those in the middle and high school age range. Although this has been an on-going issue throughout the years, many companies have contributed campaigns to counteract the negative images often portrayed in social media regarding women.

Companies like Dove, and Lane Bryant have produced body positive photo shoots and online advertisements to encourage girls to not only love their bodies, but to remind them that there are so many beautiful women out there who are struggling with the same battle.

Companies are not the only ones making a difference; YouTubers like Cassey Ho, and models like Ashley Graham are also spreading a body positive message to their audiences. Having a platform that reaches millions of users at a time can have such a monumental influence on the people who choose to view the content.

It is absolutely amazing that these companies and individuals are choosing to broadcast beautiful messages about bodies to their audiences. Making a statement like this in the media is not just important for the wellbeing of ourselves as women, but it also emphasizes to women of all ages that we don’t have to fit a certain “mold” in order to be considered beautiful. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. I think it is wonderful that we as a society are starting to realize that beauty has so many different faces and cultures as well. I hope more people follow the steps of these inspired individuals and companies so we can make the women of our world realize just how beautiful they all are in their own unique ways.
