The Boys of Summer: 6 Places to Find Your Fling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

As the semester is winding down, it’s difficult not to daydream about all the things we have to look forward to when we return home for the summer. To name a few: getting stuck behind the middle school bus, no more frat parties, having to live under our parents’ roof and obeying absurd rules that are nonexistent from August to May at JMU. But let’s look on the bright side – this transition also means that we have a few options involving boys:

·      Attempt to get back together with an ex-boyfriend from home       (X)
·      Desperately try to hook up with one of your close guy friends         (X)
·      Sexually assault your hot, older boss                                                     (X)
·      Find somebody new!                                                                            (?)

Summer is a unique time to fall in love. The heat sets the mood for lazy days and most people have ample time to relax. It’s a vacation away from the world of stress and work that usually exists on a daily basis. This creates the perfect summer fling that stays fixed in the honeymoon period of a relationship.

I’ve talked to some relationship specialists (and by specialists, I mean my friends, not Dr. Phil) and I have outlined a list of places to potentially meet boys this summer that have been proven to work! If you’re anything like me, you look for good guys in all the wrong places and then laugh about how unsuccessful you are. You and I both deserve a ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ summer romance this year, am I right?

1.  The lifeguard stand
You probably didn’t see this one coming! I know it’s unoriginal, but it’s a classic summertime activity. Spend a lot of time by the pool or ocean and it’s almost guaranteed that guys will flock to you like a pack of seagulls. In the wise words of Lexi Thayer, JMU freshman and self-proclaimed island gurl expert, “I like to spit game…seaside.” I agree with Lexi. If you got it, flaunt it!

2.  At a new job or internship
It’s practically required to make money or build your resume over the summer.  Shredding paper in an office won’t be boring if you meet a guy and hit it off. Have fun with it but be cautious with an office romance. Try and keep it on the down low if you can.

3.   Traveling
If you go on vacation with your family to the Outer Banks or take a road trip to Florida with friends, you’ll have the opportunity to meet a new guy.  Junior Katie Alberter (beach bum by day, party girl by night) has some great advice: “The best way to meet guys is to walk down the beach at Panama City.”

Don’t sweat it if you aren’t doing much traveling this summer. You can easily creep over to a neighboring town and find your summer love there. For example, scoop up somebody’s heart at his local ice cream shop! Well… you get the idea.

4.   Concerts
Tailgating and dancing around and embarrassing yourself on the lawn are great ways to meet a guy that’s trying to have as much fun as you are!

5.  At the gym
Talk about killing two birds with one stone! You’ll be forced to visit the gym every day not only to work on that beach bod, but also to see that cute guy you were hoping to run into. In no time your gym dates will turn into real dates!

6.   Strap on your bowling shoes and hit up the alley
I’m joking. Unless you’re into that kind of stuff. If you get stuck in the same routine, you will always be surrounded by the same people. With that being said, get involved in things that you don’t normally do. This summer is all about being spontaneous and open minded!

Appreciate a vacation from Carrier and find a guy to distract you from the non-college lifestyle you’ll be living for the next couple of months. Have fun with it and be confident. Live in the moment and don’t take anything too seriously. Your summer love will fall right into place!
