Cheap Summer Getaways in and Around Virginia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Summer: three months of nothing but relaxation, sun, friends, and vacations. Everyone enjoys a nice trip or two to a tropical paradise, but what exotic beaches can you go to with a student’s budget? Not many; but don’t get discouraged collegiettes™! There are a lot of exciting summer places you can travel to in the Virginia area that won’t break your bank!

If you’re from the Virginia area, you may be surprised to learn about all of the fun summer activities that await you.  If you’re feeling nature-y, adventurous, or in the mood to be one with nature you can check out Blue Hole or Reddish Knob. Blue Hole is a FREE place to swim with high ledges to jump from.  At 4,397 feet, it is known to be the highest point in Virginia! There are also picnic tables and a lake where you can cool down and enjoy lunch after a hike with friends.

If you’re not so into Mother Earth and an adrenaline rush is more your speed, you’re in luck because Williamsburg, Virginia is the home of Busch Gardens! Now that it’s summer, there are great deals that bring down the price of a normally expensive day out.

Summer wouldn’t be summer without a day at the beach, a couple of cocktails and your friends. Beaches are obviously a great getaway during your summer vacay, and if you’re a resident of Virginia, you have many options. For example, Norfolk Beach offers more than just sand and surf. Between tanning sessions, you can rent a sailboat, jet skis, paddleboats, and kayaks. The everpopular Virginia Beach also has a lot to offer for the summer. Besides the beaches, there is an Oceanfront Water Park, and Aquarium there!

Another fun idea is going camping in one of Virginia’s state parks. Usually park rates are little, if any, and sitting around the fire with tents and hot dogs is always entertaining in good company! Some other fun ideas for the summer include road tripping and spending the day in New York City or Washington D.C!

No matter where you are from, all you need is a couple of friends, sunshine and a day off from your summer job! There are always fun things to do that are budget friendly and create summer memories that will last a lifetime!
