The Dangers of Dating a Coworker

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Finding a romantic relationship is a like a job all on its own. You have to be confident and persistent! However, being stuck at work, leaving no time for play, might make this task pretty difficult. This is why the idea of looking for a romantic relationship at work is so appealing. You’re already there and you’re already working… so why not try to find a boyfriend while you’re at it?  Here are some Pros — and Cons — to having a boy toy at work.

Pros:

  • When you work with someone, chances are you know them pretty well. You are able to talk to them about stresses in your life without having to worry about sounding boring. You share similar interests, goals… and probably have similar salaries!
  • You don’t have to wear the “I’m on my best behavior” mask.
  • Proximity. Seeing each other daily takes a lot of pressure off the beginning of a relationship.
  • Working together completely eliminates the “Should I call? Should I wait for him to call?” dilemma because you’re going to see him in 10 hours.
  • Plain and simple — easy access.
  • If you both stay during lunch breaks or after hours, it could be fun to make out in the stairwell/supply closet/wherever… as long as you don’t get caught.
  • Sleeping with someone at work is a good way to offset the day-to-day “I want to shoot myself” moods.
  • Nobody knows! It’s sexy to have a secret relationship. You can be sitting across the conference table thinking, “we didd it last nighttt!”

Cons:

  • At many companies, it’s against the rules.
  • If one person has a higher salary or fighting for the same promotion, it could cause problems.
  • It’s bound to create drama. Popular spreading office gossip is unavoidable, so expect to be the brunt of a few jokes or nasty rumors.
  • OMG, you’re going to see him in 10 hours! Okay, just… be cool. No big deal. What are you going to wear? You want to look good because HE’S going to be there, but not look like you dressed up or anything, because that would be too obvious and you’re just going to work. You’ll have a huge knot in the pit of your stomach until that first “hey” in the hall and then a three-minute moment of relief before the next knot in the pit of your stomach wondering what “hey” is supposed to mean.
  • Bringing the work and frustration home. Disagreeing at work, or fighting at home, only leads to more tension everywhere.
  • Awkwardness when having to interact professionally at work.
  • Lack of privacy due to spending too much time together (especially if you work closely).
  • The break up. Oh, the break up. If you start a relationship with a co-worker and things go wrong, the atmosphere is going to be more than a little tense at the office. Especially if the relationship went horribly wrong or there was a messy break up, going back to work can be awkward, difficult, or (for some people) even impossible.

So ladies, the next time you see that cute man sitting in the next cubicle, be sure to think of these Pros and Cons before you make your move!  Just remember, neither one of you wants to get fired, so be sure to stay under the radar and drama free!
