Eliminate the Valentine’s Day Blues by Giving Love Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

For as long as I can remember, every February 14th has  consisted of red roses, cheesy Hallmark cards, love songs playing on the radio, and tons of candy. As Valentine’s Day approaches, some of us are dreading this novelty holiday. Society is constantly pressuring us through the media, such as movies, commercials, and television, to be in a relationship.

Now as a single college student, one may believe I’d be bitter about the greeting card holiday; but it’s the exact opposite! While some of my friends are out gallivanting with their significant others, I will not be watching The Notebook and eating all of the Ben & Jerry’s in sight. Instead of having a negative perspective on being single this Valentine’s Day, share your love to those that least expect it. Give your heart in a charitable way through a simple act of kindness. Here are a few ideas on how to give back this V-Day! <3

Have a Dorm cookie party

Let’s be honest, baking cookies is a traditional pastime that never gets old. This is the perfect opportunity to bond with your roommate or hall mates. Get together with someone in your hall and bake treats forthe girls and guys in your dorm. It’s a thoughtful action, and you can meet/get to know more people you live with!

Make your professors a care package

Everyone has that one professor that they love. Put together a treat bag or a nice card and surprise your professor this Valentine’s Day! If you haven’t had the opportunity to establish a relationship with any of your professors, this is a great way to approach doing so. They’ll appreciate it and they’ll remember you when it’s time to get that recommendation letter.

Make cards for soldiers

What’sa better way to say “Thank you” and “We’re thinking of you”than to our troops?! Get together with some friends and make homemade cards for our soldiers. You can also send a card through www.letssaythanks.com

Volunteer at local salvation army

Many of us are fortunate to have a bed to sleep in and have 3 meals a day. Volunteer at your local Salvation Army this Valentine’s Day. You can do as little as provide a smile andmake someone’s day.

Donate to a local organization

As college students, donating money can be difficult. Instead of digging for change, donate your service instead. Many organizations around your campus or in your local community could use your help! Call around and see how you can donate your service on Valentine’s Day.

Just remember when you’re feeling alone, someone else could always use a helping hand. I hope you’ll consider these ideas on Valentine’s Day! Don’t think of what you could have but think about what other’s don’t!

She has lived almost half of her life there and the other half in Germany due to being an Army brat. She's had the blessing of being able to travel to many different countries and experience tons of new things at a young age. Rachel loves to go to the beach, read tons of books (anything by Agatha Christie, Dan Brown, and Nicholas Sparks will do), sing, write, drink caramel chai lattes, eat her dad's spaghetti, play with Rico -- her 20 pound cat, and spend time with her fiancé , friends, and family. In addition to working as a student employee at the on campus mailroom and planning her July 2011 wedding, Rachel is in the process of obtaining a BA in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice and hopes to eventually become a psychologist in the legal system.
