The latest social media buzz has been surrounding Emma Watson’s legendary speech on gender equality. Earlier this month, Watson made it her duty to open the eyes and ears of men, women, and children all over the world on the truths about gender equality and what it really means to be a feminist. She took her speech all the way to the U.N. and ever since, the Harry Potter star has gained over 100,000 (with a goal of 200,000) male followers for the U.N. Women’s Solitary Movement known as HeForShe.
By definition, feminism is “the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.” Emphasis on the word “equal.” Feminism is not about women wanting to be greater than men or vise versa, it is simply the unity of genders to become one, to help and teach one another, and gain as equals.
It is our duty as women to advocate our deserved rights. Just think that here in America we have the pleasure to work and do just as men, but what about the rest of the world where women are viewed as less than the dirt under our feet? HeForShe is a movement to liberate all women, of all races and backgrounds, from oppression.
Men all over the world, from Prince Harry to Harry Styles and even the president of the United States, are taking a stand for the equality of the sexes. I have to say, I am a very lucky girl to have a dad who supports me in all I do and makes me feel just as equal, always telling me that I can do so much more than what I tell myself. Wouldn’t be it great to give women all over the world the same feeling?
Now my question to you is, are you a feminist? Do you want to see all men and women standing side by side without the mentality that one group is superior over the other? If you want to know more about the movement or want to take the pledge for ending gender inequality, please visit http://www.heforshe.org/ and have your voice heard.
