I, like many 20-something women on social media, have been obsessed with Freeform’s new TV series “The Bold Type”. The show follows the lives of three best friends who work in New York City, and shows us the ups and downs of working for a fashion magazine. The show was created and inspired by writers of Cosmo magazine, and I have definitely been living through all the wine nights and boy drama. Although it’s a fun show that has “feel good” vibes, there are real and vulnerable topics that are expertly woven into each episode that college aged women and beyond would really appreciate. Most shows do center on “touchy” subjects, but this show in particular focuses on women in their 20s and pretty much any woman would understand. Jane gets tested for breast cancer, sexual promiscuity is openly expressed, and there are even LGBTQ+ themes that involve a character exploring her sexuality. It isn’t just a show that you can watch with the girls on a Saturday night and forgot about in the morning. Each episode digs into an important issue and by the end audience members feel like they are closer to the characters and can take away an important lesson. As much as I love all of Sutton’s outfits, the steamy romances between characters, and the funny and sharp dialogue, this show is more than just a couple glasses of wine and a few laughs. It presents real issues that women face in their day-to-day lives, and forces anyone who watches it to think more about these issues. So if you were thinking about starting the show, or wondering if it’s worth your time…it definitely is. The women on this show are absolute trail blazers and inspire young women like me, who want to be apart of the magazine industry, that achieving your dreams is possible. As long as you hustle, work hard and believe in yourself you can accomplish anything.
