Campus Celebrities: Class of 2018 Officers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Juniata chapter.

Entering your freshman year of college demands a lot of effort and adjustment to change, yet a few select students will take the chance to jump into student government their first year. For the class of 2018, those students are Zachary Hesse, Tesia “T” Lewis, Matyas Kohout, and Catherine Adcock.

Zachary Hesse

As the second biggest freshman class in Juniata history, we needed strong leaders to speak for our class. Our President, Zach, and Vice President, “T”, chose to take on the responsibility because they saw the chance to make a difference with a shared passion for people. We’re already starting off on the right foot by getting over a 50% voter turnout, while in the past years it has been closer to about 20%.

T was active with student government in high school back in her home state of Vermont. She’s hoping to continue and improve her leadership skills. Her POE is Communications. Zach is from Cape Cod, MA, and while he originally wanted to study Biochemistry, he is now interested in Anthropology.

One thing they’re hoping to focus on is making the campus greener. They want to have a recycling competition between the dorms to promote this. Zach and T also want to work to promote campus camaraderie and address more serious issues like the responsible use of alcohol and maintaining a safe campus for all.

They want to make sure that the rest of the student body gets involved. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, stop by their office located in Ellis Hall’s OSA (Office of Student Activities) room on Wednesdays between 4 and 5. Do not hesitate to pop in!

Another way to get your voice heard is by visiting the Student Senate. You don’t have to be a senator to get in, but you won’t be allowed to vote; however, you can propose any ideas you may have. Staying for the whole meeting is optional. But, either way, getting involved in campus activities such as student government is a great way to meet new people and to put yourself out there, especially as a first-year student!Â
