BTS Makes a Statement With “Film Out” and #StopAAPIHate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kennesaw chapter.

Global artists BTS have returned with their new single and music video “Film Out” on April 1st, 2021. The song is meant to be a part of their new Japanese album set to release on June 17th.  Though “Film Out” was created primarily for Japanese-speaking audiences, the translated lyrics help non-Japanese speakers to see the painted narrative of the nostalgic and bittersweet memories that one may have of someone who’s no longer in their life.

[Verse 1]

You, in my imagination

Are so vivid, oh-oh

As if you are right there

But I reach out my hand

And you suddenly disappear

[Chorus]

From all the memories stored in my heart

I gather up the ones of you, link them together

Gazing at them projected across the room

I feel you with every burst of pain

As with most of their songs, BTS provides an escape and comfort for many who may be going through the same feelings, emotions and experiences.

Similarly, BTS tells a story in “Film Out” to capture the audience’s attention. The oldest member, Jin, gazes into a room showcasing an old memory of him and his group mates. It’s not uncommon for BTS’ fanbase, ARMY, to pick apart scenes and details in their lyrics and music videos. “Film Out” is no different. There are numerous theories in the comment section and on Twitter surrounding this video, with the top theory being that Jin is set out to save his friends from a dark fate. This is pulled from similar storylines from previous music videos and a webtoon comic dedicated to BTS and the storytelling universe they create. “Film Out” expresses itself with saturated scenes in yellow, orange, blue and ivory, making it visually appealing for the viewer.

All of this comes in light of the public #StopAsianHate letter from BTS on the recent slew of hate crimes against the Asian community. Sending their condolences to the victims and family of the victims, the members collectively recalled their experiences with racism, discrimination, and hate on their ability to speak English and physical appearances. Making their voices heard, they proclaimed:

“We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together.”

There was an outpour of support and gratitude towards the group for speaking up and standing for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. As with their songs, interviews, and personal writings, BTS encourages their fans to live life purposefully and respectfully, even when the world seems to fall apart and fight against you.
