I always knew that I liked writing. English was always my favorite class in school and when people would groan and hate when we would be assigned an essay I would secretly be hyped! I didn’t know what I wanted to major in once I got to college until I saw shows and movies that confirmed the fact that writing was what I was meant to do. Here are my top five that helped show me.Â
1. Gilmore Girls
I binge watched Gilmore Girls during high school. Rory and Lorelai relationship reminded me of my mom and I’s. I loved their dynamic. I saw myself in Rory in a lot of the seasons, and I wanted to be like her and not just for that fact that she got to kiss Dean, Jess and Logan. I wanted to go to college and major in journalism just like her. I loved how she was portrayed as a smart confident woman and in the Netflix reboot, Rory decides to write a book based on Lorelai and her. #GOALSÂ
2. Sex and The City and The Carrie Diaries
First a moment of silence for a show gone too soon…I would do anything to get The Carrie Diaries back. Anyway, I think this show is what geared me to my Fashion Media minor. I had always had a “passion for fashion” as they say. I mean when I was six I asked and got a sewing machine for Christmas. Seeing that mixing writing and fashion was an actual career path I knew that was a calling I wanted to pursue. I want to live in New York like Carrie, work for a top magazine, have three amazing friends and probably have a lot of trouble with men, but that’s fine! I added Sex and The City into this because, of course, that is just Carrie grown up still killing it!
3. The Bold Type
I just recently finished watching the current seasons of The Bold Type. Now some of the characters do grind my gears at times, (Jane…please shut up sometimes) but this is the type of work environment I hope to be able to work in. I love how positively feminist the whole atmosphere is and how Jane pretty much can write just about anything as long as it goes with the issues’ theme. I also hope to have a boss like Jacqueline Carlyle. She is honestly the best character in this whole show. #QUEEN
4. The Devil Wears Prada
Two words, MIRANDA PRIESTLY. She is an icon, legend and champion for women’s rights. I watched this movie when I was really young, and I immediately fell in love with it. This movie has so much going for it that how could you not love it. I really need to watch it again now that I am really old enough to understand everything that is happening in it.Â
5. Stuck in Love
First of all, the cast in this movie is AMAZING! Lily Collins, Logan Lerman, Nat Wolff, Kristen Bell and Greg Kinnear need I say more. This whole movie is based around an acclaimed writer, his ex and their children as they navigate life and love all through writing. Lily Collins character really spoke to me throughout this movie. She has a very cold view on love and wants no help from her author father when she wants her book published. She is a confident independent woman who is really the force throughout this movie. I used to watch this movie over and over when it was on Netflix. It’s safe to say this is one of my favorite movies of all time.Â
Whatever helps you confirm or deny what you love to do is amazing if it works for you. Some may say I am crazy for wanting to be like Carrie Bradshaw or Rory Gilmore, but I hope to take all I’ve learned from these movies and shows and explore the outlet I have chosen.Â
