Stop Using St. Ives Dangerous Scrubs and Use These Chemicals Instead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

If you’re anything like me, exfoliating is a necessary part of your skincare routine. I mean, who doesn’t just really love having your skin feel baby-butt-smooth, right? For most people, St. Ive’s Apricot facial scrub is their holy grail exfoliator because of it’s popularity and it’s constant celebrity recommendations (thanks Gigi Hadid). Unfortunately, a little over a year ago, St. Ives was sued for $5 million because it is causing irritation and inflammation. The scrub itself is made out of walnut powder which is better for our oceans, but it is not as great as you would think for your face. The way that the walnuts are grinded and cut creates sharp edges that you can’t really see well and (literally) tears your skin which over time, can cause infections and even skin damage as you age. Dermatologists who were interviewed on all different platforms all agreed on the fact the the scrub itself is too harsh. For those who still choose to use it, it is best to use it 2-3 times a week in very small amounts with extremely gentle scrubbing motions. However, for sensitive skin it is best to ditch this harsh form of exfoliation before you’re face becomes irritated and inflamed.

For me, I thought it was best to remove the physical scrubs and try something that sounds scarier but works better… Chemical Exfoliators. There are many benefits including the fact that it is quick, doesn’t require scrubbing, works deeper than a physical exfoliator, creating longer-lasting results, as well as reducing the signs of aging. The way it works is that when the chemical is applied to the skin, it penetrates both the top and bottom layer of the skin and removes the bond between the dead skin cells and the new skin cells. They come in all different forms including masks, gel, wipes, liquids and serums. To help you find a great first chemical exfoliator, here are some suggestions.

1. PIXI GLOW TONIC,  3.4 fl oz, $15

2. THE ORDINARY PEELING SOLUTION, 30 ml, $14

3. NEOGEN DERMATOLOGY GAUZE PEELING LEMON, 30 pads, $27

Currently, this is what I am using and I have never been so in love with a product! I swear by it. Not only does it get rid of your acne overnight, but it instantly brightens your face!

4. FIRST AID BEAUTY FACIAL RADIANCE PADS, 60 pads, $32

5. SATURDAY SKIN RUB-A-DUB REFINING PEEL GEL, 75 ml, $28
