Here at Kent State, we are almost at spring break! Since midterms are almost wrapping up for the semester, many students are extremely excited to finally unwind and have fun during their time off. But, with all the anticipation, when you finally walk into the doors of your home there is always that feeling of “well, what now?”
Today, I will be giving you 15 things to do during spring break, based on my experiences.
1. Go to a Flea market or farmers market
There are always plenty of events going on in the area around you; you just may not know about it. I love to use Facebook and go onto the “events section” to see if anything intrigues me. These two would be great, so you can support small businesses and also get things for a better deal. Who can pass up fresh produce that is good for your body?
2. Catch up with friends and family
For some, it may be months until they are able to see their family and friends if they are far away from home. Take this time to catch up with them and see what things are new! With any of these ideas, you can invite them to join you as a fun day! You deserve to enjoy your relationships.
3. Check out a local bookstore
Something I absolutely adore to do is check out all of the local bookstores! I am a big advocate for helping the smaller businesses over bigger corporations, so take some time to check it out! The way they decorate the little book stores are beautiful in itself. Last Exit is an amazing bookstore and café in Kent!
4. Spring cleaning
We are busy people and hard workers. It can be hard to keep up with the atmosphere that we live in. This is a great time to give your car a good deep cleaning, donate some clutter in your bedroom or apartment and reorganize your things. A tidy living space is a tidy mind. Your have worked hard to earn the items you have today, treat them with love.
5. Baking with the windows open and some music on
If you enjoy baking this would be a fun one! Sometimes my mom and I will open the windows in the kitchen, blast music on our vintage record player and bake something delicious. It is a good distraction, but it’s also a great treat!
6. Cafe day
Speaking of treats, going to a cafe is a great way to catch up with loved ones and enjoy some cafe vibes with groups of quiet and happy chatter. Maybe crack open a book or do some sketching if you are spending this cafe time for yourself.
7. Go Outside
The outdoors for me, relieves so much anxiety and stress. Since it is starting to get warmer and sunnier out, maybe go for a hike with some people you care about, take your dog for a walk or even just sit outside and enjoy the sun and newly budded flowers.
8. HAve a sit in day with movies and takeout
It is always nice to just binge watch your favorite films or tv shows with some good takeout and some cozy blankets. Take this time to feel comfort at finally being back in your cozy home.
9. Get a new tattoo, piercing or haircut
If there has been something you have been wanting to give yourself as a makeover, you should treat yourself! Remember that you always deserve to treat yourself, especially with all the hard work you have done.
10. Volunteer
It is always a great thing to help out your local community! If you have the free time and are willing to do active service, take some time to look at some places around where you live to see if any owners are asking for hardworking volunteers!
11. Clean out your phone storage
Although we do not realize it, we are in a digital age where we are always adding stuff on our phones in some type of way. Take some time to clear out some apps, photos and text messages you do not need anymore. It will make a huge difference.
12. Thrifting and Antiquing
Thrifting is such good fun! You are always on the hunt, looking for unique items to add to your collection for a lower price. If you have the time, check out some antique shops too. It may seem expensive, but at least for me I usually find something beautiful for a good price if I look hard enough! Some Kent thrift stores include Einstein’s Attic, Sun In Leo and Goodwill.
13. Pick up a new hobby
It is never too late to try out a new hobby! It could be reading, writing, knitting, crochet, listening to new music or crafting. The possibilities are endless. With the open time, you finally have a chance to give a crack at it. Why not give it a shot?
14. Register to vote
If you are the legal age, register to vote! It takes a bit of time, but since there are a few less stresses during break, when compared to the school year, this is a great opportunity to do so.
15. Nothing!
You deserve to have a day to just relax and do absolutely nothing on your well deserved break. Do not beat yourself up over having a day to just lay around. Maybe take some time to stretch, binge, eat some good snacks, use a face mask and just focus on yourself.
This is YOUR break! Take every day in and relish it while you can. You deserve to have fun and treat yourself with things that you love to do. <3
