Unpopular Opinion: I Like Snow

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

It snowed in Kent this past week and there were some mixed feelings about it. Some people absolutely hate snow, some people hate being out in the snow but think it’s pretty to look at and fewer people enjoy all things snow, winter and cold. I am one of the few people who like snow and always have.

Now, to please the people who hate snow, I get that snow is cold and once it starts to melt, it’s gross and everyone wants it gone. I understand that with snow comes ice, slush and car frost, but hear me out while I try to explain why it is that I’m weird and like snow.

We can all admit that when snow falls for the first time and actually sticks, it is very pretty. Nothing beats fresh, not walked on, sparkling white snow that perfectly coats the tree branches. When the wind blows just right, it feels like you’re walking in a snowglobe. As for the cold argument, that’s why they make winter clothes such as hats, gloves, scarves, snow boots and winter coats. If you don’t have these items, then that’s probably one reason why you’re cold. I personally love to be cold because then I can bundle up in all my warm winter clothes. It takes fall layering to a whole new level.

I have to admit that some of my love for snow comes from my childhood. I grew up in the country and whenever it snowed, my brother and I would be out there all day building things, sledding, ice skating or playing broomstick hockey on our ditch that surrounded our house. My dad would also push all of the snow from our driveway into huge snow piles which my brother and I would turn into slides or houses. Then, after a long day in the snow, we’d come inside and enjoy some hot chocolate, cozy up in some warm blankets and watch movies, Christmas and others. Being out in the cold is worth it to me because whenever you walk inside anywhere warm, you instantly start to feel your body defrost and, I don’t know why, but I like that feeling and also having a red nose and rosy cheeks, I just love it.

Lastly, when it snows, I immediately think of the holidays and being with my family for Christmas or New Years. This time of year is my favorite hands down. It brings back memories and, yes trees are dying or already dead, but it means new life is on its way, which I think can make sense for people too. We take the wintertime to examine the past year and look to what we want to change or do better next year so we can be prettier, healthier and happier, which is just like the trees that come back even more beautiful in the spring.

It came so quickly and just like that, the snow has started to melt, and soon it will be gone until the next snowfall.
